This soba noodle restaurant with a simple yet warm mountain hut-like exterior is well known for making great handmade soba noodles with buckwheat flour made locally in the Yatsugatake Mountains and from carefully-selected domestic producers. Their flavorful noodles, prepared exclusively with spring water from Mt. Tennyo, pair incredibly well with the restaurant's dipping sauce. The sauce uses soy sauce made from whole domestic soy beans and aged for three years.

Whether it's making hoto noodles, savoring Yamanashi's local cuisine, watching an authentic taiko drum performance, or visiting the history museum, guests at this well-known Koshu-themed entertainment restaurant can enjoy the charms of Yamanashi in a number of ways. We recommend having a meal while enjoying one of their thrice-daily taiko drum performances.

They have live performance which was pretty good. Food was alright. I have to give extra points for the effort of letting the food cook and maintain heat using burning fire. The pork was nice.

Located in one of the Fujimi Sankei (three best viewpoints of Mt. Fuji), this teahouse established in 1934 has long been popular as a spot to enjoy a landscape of Mt. Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi. Due to the teahouse's association with Dazai Osamu, its second floor serves as the Dazai Osamu Literary Memorial Room. Their hoto noodle hotpot featuring copious amounts of stewed vegetables and homemade noodles finished with locally-made miso paste was beloved by both Dazai Osamu and Ibuse Masuji.

Yatsukoma Hirauchi Soba is located along National Route 141, reachable from either the Sutama Interchange or the Nagasaka Interchange on the Chuo Expressway. Its business hours are 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., but customers will be happy to know that the owners can serve them outside those hours by prior arrangement, even if only one guest makes this request. Note, however, that the owners close the restaurant when they have sold all their soba for the day. Everything, including the noodles, is made by hand, although traditional grinding blocks are used to grind the dried fish for the Dashi (broth). In pursuit of perfect flavor, they take great care in adding the thickener and other processes. The most recommended dish is Seiro, in which each chopstick full of soba is dipped in the sauce individually.

This soba shop is in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. It uses stone-ground, clear soba flour for aromatic noodles. On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, they offer a taste-test platter of four types of noodle: 100% soba (course ground), 100% Dattan soba (Tartary buckwheat), and 100% whole grain soba. This will help accent the differences in these unique styles of noodles.

This handmade udon noodle restaurant, popular with those going mountain climbing in the area, is located a two-minute walk from Nirasaki Station and a 10-minute drive from the Nirasaki Interchange. The restaurant serves udon noodles laboriously made by hand each morning using flour specially ground by a local flour company. The slightly yellow noodles have a chewy and refreshing texture. The Ten-zara, which includes udon noodles served on a draining basket and tempura, is particularly popular. In addition to udon, the restaurant offers a full array of dishes; particularly recommended is the Japanese yam steak made with local grated Japanese yam formed into a steak and garnished with perilla and umeboshi. You'll love the differing outside and inside textures.

An udon noodle shop located close to Shimoyoshida Station on the Fujikyuko Otsuki Line. Particularly recommended are the chilled tanuki udon made with Mt. Fuji's famous spring water, nabeyaki udon hotpot made with noodles that stay chewy even when simmered for an extended period of time, and the nikuten udon topped with horsemeat and squid tempura. The restaurant's chewy noodles are a little on the softer side and are served with miso and soy sauce-based broths. Yoshida udon noodles are normally topped with cabbage, but this restaurant's noodles are instead notably topped with spinach.

A soba noodle shop located 15 minutes from the Nagasaka Interchange on the Chuo Expressway. As you enter the subdued Japanese style interior a glass walled soba pulling corner is just to your right. They use only seasonal local produce and fresh ingredients and their buckwheat is traditional Edo-buckwheat, bought directly from contracted farmers and ground themselves. The noodles are handmade every morning with the water the Yatsugatake mountain region is blessed with. Their dipping sauce has a little kick to it in the Edo-style and they proudly serve both tempura dipping soba and soba soup with mushrooms. Reservations are required in the evening and you can try a soba kaiseki traditional multi course meal.

Although the mountain straddles both Yamanashi and Shizuoka, the most breathtaking views of Fuji-san can be seen from the Fuji Five Lakes north of the mountain in Yamanashi prefecture. The plethora of outdoor activities in and around the lakes all have the benefit of the country’s highest mountain as their backdrop, and we can assure you that it is an unforgettable sight.
