This castle on a hill, located in Maruoka Town of Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, was built by Shibata Katsuie’s nephew Shibata Katsutoyo in 1576. Nowadays, only two-story and three-roofed castle tower (tenshukaku) remains, and it was registered as Important Cultural Properties in 1950. It is the oldest tenshukaku in existence in the country, and about 400 cherry trees were planted around it as part of the surrounding Kasumigajo Park. A light-up event is held when the cherry blossoms bloom, giving the tower an ethereal look.

This castle ranks 30th of the thousands of Japanese ancient castles. However there was nothing much to see. It was destroyed in an earthquake and it was rebuilt after that. The ticket set including...

Located along National Route 364 in Kamitakeda, Maruokacho Town, Sakai City, this well-established tofu shop was founded in 1925. The signature abura-age (deep-fried bean curd) uses underground water from Mt. Hakusan and choice domestic soy beans for its tofu which is crisply and aromatically fried up with rapeseed oil. At the restaurant you can try dishes that use abura-age like “takeda no abura-age gozen” and at the retail shop, you can purchase freshly fried tofu, as well as sweets using tofu or soy milk.

Tojinbo Sightseeing Boat Cruises offers boat trips to view the spectacular scenery of the Tojinbo cliffs from the ocean. Located in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, the Tojinbo cliffs have been designated as a National Natural Monument; the precipitous cliffs with their distinctive rough surface extend for about 1 km along the coast. Some of the cliffs reach a height of 20 meters or more; watching the raging waves of the Sea of Japan crash against the cliffs is a magnificent sight. On a trip halfway round Oshima Island (which lies around 1.5 km off the coast), which takes around 30 minutes, passengers can view several rocks with unusual shapes that have been created by the action of natural forces, including Lion Rock, Battleship Rock, Folding Screen Rock, and Candle Rock. Places can be found on the boat trip for individual travelers (with a 15–20 minute wait).

Quotes from my guide (in Japanese): Dont worry, we have plenty of barf bags. Use all you want. The rocks look like they should fall, but they dont. But sometimes people do. Straight in...

Run by a long-running fish wholesaler and purveyor to the Imperial Household Agency, this restaurant lets you taste the fresh bounty of the ocean taken from the nearby Mikuni Port. It is a famous shop featured in magazines and various media. The most popular item is “kaisen don” —a bountiful dish with sea urchin, salmon roe, and Mikuni seafood like squid and sweet shrimp piled high on rice. Born from the amalgamation of 20 years of history and the thoughts of many people, the Ippitsu Keijo Tegami Museum began with “Ippitsu Keijosho Award” built of the theme of Honda Sakuzemon Shigetsugu’s letters. In the regular exhibit, you can see the history of the “Ippitsu Keijosho Award” along with the prize-winning pieces. Also, sometimes special exhibits are held.

Tojinbo, the beauty spot is a stretch of steep cliffs with a rock face which has been eroded by the waves. The rock cliffs which have a height of about 25 meters continue along the Mikuni coastline for about one kilometer. “Columnar jointing of pyroxene andesite” of this scale can only be seen in three places around the world, and in 1935, it was designated as a Natural Monument and a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan. You can enjoy a powerful landscape from the pleasure boats which go around the strangely shaped rocks such as the “Beehive rock” and the “Lion rock”.

There are several exhibits where visitors can observe and interact with marine and waterside life up close, as well as shows and feeding events. Tojinbo Tower rises to a height of 100 meters above sea level and 55 meters above the ground, giving spectacular views; its status as the only large observation tower on the Sea of Japan coast has made it very popular. From the second floor level of the Tower, visitors can view the Tojinbo Coast, with its precipitous cliffs (sculpted by the action of the Sea of Japan’s fierce waves) which extend for a length of around one kilometer, as well as Oshima Island and the Echizen Coast; looking the other way, they can see the peaks of Mt. Hakusan. Tojinbo Tower is also famous as a great place for bringing couples closer together. The Tower is located approximately 25-minute drive from the Kanazu Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway.
