  • Tsukumo Bridge

    The original Tsukumo Bridge was famous for its usual half-wood, half-stone construction, with the northern half being made from wood, and the southern half being made from stone. Also known by names such as Kitanosho Ohashi Bridge, the bridge has historical ties to Shibata Katsuie. Built after Katsuie took command of Kitanosho Castle, it survived for 330 years until it was replaced in 1909.

    This local specialty products store carries an abundance of Fukui's most famous goods, including Kitamaebune no Kawamoto's kombu (kelp) products, and homemade yakisaba (grilled mackerel) sushi. A popular destination, the store also has a space where you can watch how Fukui delicacies are made and even try making some yourself. Of particular note, this is the only place you can watch a live demonstration of the process involved in making tesuki oboro kombu (handmade shredded kelp), a rare traditional technique dating back 400 years.

The beach conveniently has many beachside teahouses during the open season.

    もともと越前藩医の別荘だったそうで、現在は「料亭の庭」です。インターホンで見学の由を伝えると入れてもらえます(9時ごろから料亭の営業開始まで)。屋敷には新旧の建物が点在しており、いくつかは営業用の新しいもの、国の登録文化財である「草庵」は資料館となっていますが、圧巻は笏谷石の採石場跡、コウモリが飛び交う、真夏でも涼しく、高湿度の空間です。

    京王百貨店新宿店7階で開催中された『福井県 越前・若狭の物産と観光展u202c』にて購入した「えがわ」の『水羊かん』は、凛と冷えたはかない口当たりと黒糖の風味は夏にはもってこいだが、冬の室内で炬燵の中で味わうのもまた一興でした。サイズも二種あって買い求めやすく、皆複数個買って帰っていました。

    ボリューミーで美味しかった! あいにくイカ刺しは食べられなかったけど、カニはいっぱい食べました。 大きな海老フライも美味しかったです!

    A historical site near Ichijodani Station in Abaka-cho, Fukui City. It's located within the Ichijodani Asakura Family Historic Ruins Special Historic Site and the former grounds of what is now the Fukui City Kagetsu Nishiyama Koshoji Temple known for the Fukui Dai-Butsu great Buddha statue. A number of stone Buddha statues and building cornerstones found during archaeological digs confirm that this was once a vast temple area.

Along with their kaiseki meals made using seasonal ingredients they also serve a lunch menu with course meals, separated bento box lunches, and tempura rice bowls as well as individual plates in the evening. They are well known for their oshizushi (pressed sushi) including Raw Mackerel Sushi made with freshly caught Wakasa Mackerel and with advance notice you can also purchase souvenirs.

    出張の際、取引先の方とランチで伺いました。 大きな道路に面しているわけでもなく、住宅を改装したかのようなたたずまい。 和食中心としたランチメニューもリーズナブルで、今回は「お刺身たっぷり膳」を注文。 盛り付けは見た目よく、おいしく頂けました。 混みこみしていないのでゆっくりとランチが出来るのも良いお店です。

    A classic townhouse garden surrounded by greenery located at the foot of Mt. Osagoe in the southwest region of Fukui City. Over the vast 3700 square meter grounds you'll find a number of buildings that have been relocated and restored including six classic homes built during the Edo period, a storehouse, an ash-hut, and an outdoor toilet. All are designated as Cultural Properties of the City. Three of the houses are in the traditional Tsuma-iri entrance on gable side style which was widespread throughout the central Echizen and Ono Basin. This style was unique to the region and features the doma earthen floor room and kitchen as one area covered with thick cross shaped beams. Furniture and other household supplies have been arranged in the houses allowing visitors to see how people lived back in those days.

    A park in Sanai-cho, Fukui City. Present are graves for Sanai Hashimoto who was found by Shungaku Matsudaira, former ruler of the Echizen Province, Fukui Domain to be very talented for politics at a young age, and participated in the clan administration. However he was executed during the Ansei Purge at the end of the Edo period. The Bozensai Festival is held annually on October 7th, the anniversary of his death. There is also a bronze statue of Sanai Hashimoto.

    A long-standing curry and coffee shop. They were in the Katamachi area for over 50 years but moved due to renovation of the surrounding buildings. They moved to their current location just a few years ago. They brought much of their interior design including their chandelier and chairs with them from the old location so the inner atmosphere of the shop is unchanged. And of course their menu is still the same allowing you to enjoy their classic slow-stewed western-style curry.

    ご夫婦でやっていらっしゃるカレー屋さん。カレーの味がとても美味しいです。こじんまりとしていて、レトロな店内です。

    A long-standing Echizen Soba noodle shop that has been open for 80 years. They use stone-ground buckwheat flour made from local Fukui prefecture buckwheat. They're also very particular about their broth and make it using a secret method from shavings of top-quality dried bonito. Their main menu item is Echizen Soba with cold soba topped with spicy daikon radish, bonito flakes, and green onion and served with broth pouring over soba noodles. You can order additional toppings including wild plants, tempura, and mochi. They also offer a hearty set-meal menu and a la carte options.

    こちらは、福井銀行のすぐ隣りにあります。 はっと見、小さいお店せのようですが、奥行きが広く2階席もあり、2階席は、ゆったり広くモダンな雰囲気です。 おろし蕎麦をオーダーしました。 ほどなくして出てきました。 盛り付けは綺麗で美味しそうです。 蕎麦は普通の色・きしめんの様な太さで、コシがあり、のど越しも良くつゆは大根の甘みがあり美味しです。

Compared to western candles these candles are marked by their thicker wick and larger flames. These candles are highly regarded and are used by many temples including Eiheiji Temple. They offer simple white candles as well as a variety of multicolored artistically decorated candles in reds, blues, golds, and other colors. They also offer gentle aromatic candles.

    This gate was the original entrance to Shounin Temple. The temple is tied to the Asakura Clan, which ruled the entire Echizen Province during the warring states period. It was built in order to pray for the repose of the soul of the Asakura Yoshikage, the fifth head of the Asakura Clan, following his death and the clan’s destruction by Oda Nobunaga’s forces. The temple was later relocated and now only this gate remains at its original location. The gate is part of the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins, which serve to convey the history of the Asakura Clan. It also functions as the entrance to the historic ruins. Its unique Chinese-style design helps to convey the culture of that time to today.

    These ruins were once the manor house of the Asakura Clan, which ruled Echizen Province during the warring states period. The ruins are part of the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins, which serve to convey the history of the Asakura Clan. It is said that it was the residence of Asakura Yoshikage, the fifth head of the Asakura Clan. Its vast grounds are surrounded by earthen walls and moats on three sides. The home’s tsunegoten (master’s pavilion), main building, tearoom, kitchens, and other buildings were once neatly arranged within this enclosure. The flower beds in its gardens are believed to be the oldest in Japan. The garden’s large scale and refined appearance can still be seen in its beautifully-designed rock arrangements.

    This garden is part of the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins, which serve to convey the history of the Asakura Clan that ruled Echizen Province during the warring states period. The garden is located on high ground overlooking the ruins of the Asakura Yakata, the former residence of the Asakura Clan’s fifth head, Asakura Yoshikage. The garden, which features a wild and vigorous rock arrangement, has a different appearance from the other gardens in the ruins. Waterways built along the mountain’s edge from north to south lead to the top of a waterfall. It is said to be the oldest garden in the Ichijodani Asakura Clan Ruins.
