Tojinbo Tower rises to a height of 100 meters above sea level and 55 meters above the ground, giving spectacular views; its status as the only large observation tower on the Sea of Japan coast has made it very popular. From the second floor level of the Tower, visitors can view the Tojinbo Coast, with its precipitous cliffs (sculpted by the action of the Sea of Japan’s fierce waves) which extend for a length of around one kilometer, as well as Oshima Island and the Echizen Coast; looking the other way, they can see the peaks of Mt. Hakusan. Tojinbo Tower is also famous as a great place for bringing couples closer together. The Tower is located approximately 25-minute drive from the Kanazu Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway.

Being a syncretized Shinto and Buddhist temple, this is an extremely rare temple where worshippers clap their hands. It is famous for the Shinto ritual of omizu-okuri (sending water) to the Nara’s Todaiji Temple Nigatsu-do Hall. It houses a late Kamakura period Deva Gate (a Nationally Important Cultural Property) and Nanboku-cho period wooden god and sitting goddess statues as well as the main hall (also a National Important Cultural Property) which was built in the Muromachi period and is so magnificent that it is said to be the best in Wakasa.

With a deep faith and history spanning over 1,500 years since its founding, the Asuwa-jinja Shrine—named for the ancestor deity of Echizen—venerates Emperor Keitai as the main deity, with other deities worshipped here as well. On the grounds you’ll find takao maples and weeping cherry trees which were designated as Natural Monuments in 1970. They are best viewed in mid November and around April 10th respectively, when many visitors enjoy them.

This zoo is one of the few in the country to successfully breed red pandas. Red pandas don’t like the heat so you can’t see them much in summer, but there are live cameras placed inside and outside the red panda house, so you can see them in all their cuteness.
