  • Ningyo no Hama (Mermaid Beach)

    Fukui Obama-shi Obamashiratori
    A beach located along Kaigan-dori street in Obamashiratori, Obama City. The name of this man-made beach is linked to the legend of Yao-Bikuni who is said to have lived for 800 years after eating the flesh of a mermaid. On August 1st they hold the Wakasa Marinpia Fireworks Show at the beach. Next to the beach is the Mermaid Terrace with two mermaid statues.

    A park located along Prefectural Route 235 in Obamakatori, Obama City. An observation platform has been constructed facing Obama Bay and gives a great view over the city, Uchitomi Peninsula, and Oshima Peninsula. In spring the nearly 150 cherry trees planted in the park come into blossom and a special Sakura Cherry Blossom Festival is held with evening illuminations of the trees.

    A campsite along Prefectural Route 224 in Natasho Somegatani, Ohi town, Ohi County. The vast plot covers 228 ha and is surrounded by an Old-Growth forest that has been selected as one of the Top 100 Forested Water and the Top 100 Forested Valleys in Japan. It's equipped with lodging options including tent sites, bungalows, and cottages. In addition to a barbeque hut there's also all-weather facilities and a dining hall, as well as a hands-on experience hall, a bouldering wall, and a fishing area. You can even try spending the night in a Native American teepee style tent.

    A campsite in Wada, Takahama Town, Ohi County. The seaside campsite is attached to Wakasa Wada Beach and is equipped with divided lots, permanent tents, and an all-weather barbeque area. Along with overnight camping you can also use the facilities for day-camping or just using the barbeque house (depending on season).

    A museum located along Sanban-dori Street in Tenjin-cho, Ono City. Their collection includes historical materials ranging from the Jomon period to the early modern period. On display are materials related to the Mt. Hakusan faith and the political reforms of Toshitada Doi, seventh member of the Doi family to rule over the Ono Domain.

    A plant nursery in Ya, Ono City. A promenade wanders through the nearly 3 ha grounds where over 1 million dogtooth violets grow naturally and throughout the seasons you can also enjoy other flowers including cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and red buckwheat flowers amongst others. From mid-March to mid-April they hold the Dogtooth Violet Festival with a variety of special events.

    A multi-use complex located along Prefectural Route 221 in Minamirokuroshi, Ono City. They have an organic restaurant serving meals made with Jersey beef and highland vegetables and a lodge available for rent that can accommodate up to 28 guests. They offer different hands-on courses including making ice-cream with freshly milked milk, butter churning, and barbeque (all of which require prior reservation) and the venue can be used for a highland themed wedding.

    A park located within Echizen Pottery Village in Ozowara, Echizen Town, Nyu County. The park features a ceramics area with 15 pieces of Echizen-ware pottery by artists such as Okamoto Taro and Isamu Noguchi as well as maintained pathways and lawn areas. A variety of events are held throughout the seasons including the Echizen Pottery Festival held in late May every year. Located next to the park are facilities including the Fukui Prefectural Museum of Ceramics and the Echizen Old Kiln Museum.

    A beach along the Isaribi Kaido Road in Kuriya, Echizen Town, Nyu County. This is the largest beach in the area and you can see all the way along the Echizen coastline to Echizen Cape. It features a gravel beach with crystal clear waters and you can enjoy not just swimming but also scuba diving.

They offer diving experiences for beginners (reservation required), training courses for gaining your diving license, and equipment rentals. The facility also has a dining room.

    A botanical garden located along National Route 417 in Asahi, Echizen Town, Nyu County. In a site covering 25 ha you can see over 3,000 types of naturally growing plants. In the main building they have exhibits displaying the evolutionary history of plants as well as a mini greenhouse with a collection of succulent plants. They also have hands-on classes such as creating handicrafts using plants.

  • Kanegasaki Ryokuchi Park

    A park in Kanegasaki-cho, Tsuruga City. Located looking out at Tsuruga Port the park has both a boardwalk and a board deck making this a great place to take a seaside stroll. Also located within the park is the Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum, which displays materials related to Jewish refugees who fled from Europe to Tsuruga Port during World War 2 as well as the Former Tsuruga Port Station Building, which is now a railway museum.

    Mizushima, an uninhabited island floating in Tsuruga Bay near the tip of the Tsuruga Peninsula, is known for its crystal-clear waters and beautiful white beaches. During the summer beach season ferries run from Irogahama and Urasoko to Mizushima and the beaches are packed with bathers.

    On the east side of Tsuruga Bay there are several farms along the coast in the Higashiura region of Tsuruga City where you can enjoy orange picking from mid-October to late November. Come taste the sweet and sour flavor of the Higashiura Mikan orange grown in the Echizen coastal area, said to be the furthest northern limit for orange farming.

    An exhibition hall located along Prefectural Route 141 in Myojin-cho, Tsuruga City. There are a variety of exhibits teaching about nuclear power generation, including the power generation mechanism at Tsuruga Power Station, radiation and waste disposal, and an exhibition introducing wild birds and fish that live in the surrounding area. There's also an open-air lawn playground with play equipment looking over the power plant.

    A daffodil flower intensive cultivation display located within Echizen Suisen-no-Sato Park along the Isaribi Highway in Ikura Town, Fukui city. This was the first area in Japan to have daffodils blooming throughout the year and you can view the Echizen daffodils year-round. Admission is permitted with a shared ticket with the nearby Koshino Furusato Museum.
  • Kunimidake Forest Park

    A park in Kunimimoto-machi, Fukui City. It's located situated over the summit of Mt. Kunimidake at an elevation of 656 meters and looks out over the Echizen coast and the Fukui Plain. It's equipped with maintained paths, lawn areas, and observation platforms, as well as campsites and bungalows. On weekends and holidays barbeque pits are available for rent (reservation required).
  • Sanai Park

    A park in Sanai-cho, Fukui City. Present are graves for Sanai Hashimoto who was found by Shungaku Matsudaira, former ruler of the Echizen Province, Fukui Domain to be very talented for politics at a young age, and participated in the clan administration. However he was executed during the Ansei Purge at the end of the Edo period. The Bozensai Festival is held annually on October 7th, the anniversary of his death. There is also a bronze statue of Sanai Hashimoto.
  • Fukui Kenko no Mori Heated Pool

    A large heated pool located within the Fukui Kenko no Mori, managed by the Fukui Prefectural Health Administration Association. The glass walls give the building a feeling of openness and it features a variety of pools including a 50-meter pool. There's also a shallow pool with a slide where children can play safely and an outdoor pool connected to a 160-meter long lazy river. There are two waterslides that can be used year-round, one at 126-meter-long and the other at 46-meter-long.

Fukui Areas


Northeast of Kyoto, the ancient Tojinbo Cliffs separate Fukui prefecture from the Sea of Japan in a stretch of land well worth exploring. Water sports and seaside delicacies are available in abundance as the spectacular rugged coastline flattens down into beaches to the west of the prefecture, while inland, Fukui is home to Zen Buddhist temples and historic ruins.
