    Built based on careful research of Heian period gardens, Murasaki Shikibu Park is a park in Echizen with connections to the Heian Period literary great, Murasaki Shikibu. There is much to see, including the statue of Murasaki Shikibu, monument engraved with her songs, Tsuridono building, and Izumidono building, etc. Adjacent to the park is “Fujinami-tei,” where you can see more materials related to Murasaki Shikibu.

    With a forest jungle gym, and mini-rafting near the source of the Asuwa River, Tree Picnic Adventure Ikeda is fun for kids and adults, even including barbeque equipment and a cottage. In the “Café Picnic” located in the “Center House,” you’ll find local dishes prepared using ingredients from Ikeda Town. Naturally, you can take-out food from there and eat anywhere you like on the park grounds.

    Flush with 150,000 blooming lilies, Yurinosato Park is famous for its “Yuri Festa” held every June, and is a popular spot visited by 90,000 people yearly. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., there is a performance of water, light, and sound using projection mapping, 60,000 aquatic lights and LEDs to create a spectacular view. You’ll find athletic equipment and slides in the park, so the kids will have something to do too. Surrounded by nature, the barbeque square is a great place to enjoy a barbeque, but you must make a reservation before coming.

  • Nishiyama Park

    The only spot along the Sea of Japan famous for azaleas, Nishiyama Park is known for its roughly 50,000 azaleas, and is invigorated with many visitors who come during the “Tsutsuji Festival” held early May each year. There are other events too, like the “Momiji Festival” in fall and the “Sabae Snow Festival” in winter.

    Opened in 1985, the Sabae City Nishiyama Zoo has made great strides in raising and breeding rare wild animals, particularly the red panda. This zoo is one of the few in the country to successfully breed red pandas. Red pandas don’t like the heat so you can’t see them much in summer, but there are live cameras placed inside and outside the red panda house, so you can see them in all their cuteness.

    I took a quick side-trip to the zoo (which is tiny) but it has a bunch (a dozen?) red pandas in separate enclosures. There are also some showy pheasants and peacocks and some spider monkeys, but...

  • Matsubara Bathing Beach

    This beach is popular with families for its many attractions aimed for children. It is notable for its Kehi-no-Matsubara Pine Grove, one of Japan’s top three pine groves, as well as for its 1.5 kilometers length. The beach, which conveniently has a number of beachside teahouses, is open from early July to mid-August.

    This beach blessed with clear waters is mostly used for guests at the nearby guesthouses and children from local elementary schools. Since the beach does not have facilities such as showers, it is mostly only used by locals except for the busiest parts of the summer. Fewer tourists mean you can enjoy swimming at a more leisurely pace. Because the beach is comprised of fine gravel, it’s best to bring beach shoes along with the usual drinks and food.

    This park is popular for its amazing views from the eastern observation deck of the Mikata-goko Lakes, which were designated as a Ramsar Site in 2005. The park’s rose garden, which has more than 600 roses of 110 varieties, is a must-see. The best viewing periods are May 20 to June 20 in spring and October 20 to November 20 in the fall.

    三方五胡レインボーラインの中ほどからケーブルカーが出ていて、梅丈岳の山頂公園に登ることができます。お昼時でしたが山頂で食事できる場所はないというので、ケーブルカー乗り口の隣にある特産品販売所で、カレーとソースカツ丼をテイクアウトして登りました。カツは揚げたてで美味しかったのですが、カレーは少々残念な味でした。

    RokuroshiKogenOnsen Camping Ground is located in Ono City in Fukui Prefecture. Said to have the best views of the night sky in Japan, it is the perfect site for a campground that features stargazing sessions. The stargazing sessions start at 5 p.m. on Saturdays if starts are visible, and anyone from individuals to groups can join them without making reservations. A variety of lodging options are available: tent sites, camping cabins, cottages, and Finnish-style log houses. The campground also boasts an outdoor kitchen and a hot spring bath.

    This museum, which collects, stores and exhibits objects concerning the history and folklore of the Wakasa region, actively plans various events including themed and touring exhibitions in addition to a wide range of permanent exhibitions such as Buddha statues made in the region and those influenced by the former capital Kyoto, the diverse festival culture of Wakasa and artefacts from the Paleolithic to the Tumulus Periods. There are also original products incorporating typical Wakasa historical and natural scenes in their designs on sale.

The pufferfish and snow crab bring in many fans in winter.

    This is a mini park with the theme of mushrooms, the specialty of Oi-cho. Kinoko Monoshirikan is a facility with environmental models recreating the growth of mushrooms, exhibits of replicas of approximately 120 types of edible and poisonous mushrooms, mushrooms from around the world and rare mushrooms and visitors can see the cultivation of shiitake mushrooms, the specialty of Oi-cho. There is also a specialty shop as well as Kinoko Chaya, which serves snacks, and a barbeque facility.

    Our 4 and 6 year old daughters absolutely loved this park. There are two 200m long roller slides accessed from the top of the giant mushroom tower (complete with elevator) or via a type of obstacle...

    This museum, which was reopened after renovations in 2016, is a place where you can encounter a new kind of “crab culture.” In this hands-on facility, visitors can have fun and learn about Echizen crabs and the mysteries of the Sea of Japan. The facility is divided into seven zones including the Crab Lab where you can study the different kinds of crabs and the structure of their bodies and the Under-sea Tunnel where you can see the different fish of the seasons off the Echizen coast.

    2019年11月越前カニ祭りで大学2年の娘と訪れました。高速道路の事故、渋滞で到着が14時と出遅れました。道の駅越前で毎年開催されます。道路も渋滞、すごい人出です。カニを求めて「カニ食いに行こう」です。毎年、少しづつ値段が上がっています。けれど美味しいカニを食べに来てしまいました。

    2019年11月の日曜日、越前カニ祭りに訪れました。ものすごい人出です。カニ食いに多くの人が訪れています。値段も毎年少しづつ上がっていますが、やむを得ないところですね。
