    In addition to the peripheral garden Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle Park is a treasure for the people of Ishikawa Prefecture. It is a center of history, and the castle—formerly the home of Kaga’s million-koku strong Maeda clan—is open to the public. There are innumerable sties to see, including Important National Cultural Properties like the Ishikawa Gate, Sanjikken Nagaya, and Tsurumaru Warehouse, as well as the grandeur of recent reconstructions of the Hishiyagura (tower), Gojikken Nagaya (gate), and Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura (tower). You can get a strong sense of Kaga’s history and culture by visiting there. Approximately 20 minutes by car via Kanazawa-Morimoto Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway.

    This integrated art museum is located in Dewamachi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It opened in 1959 and was moved to its current location in 1983. The museum collects and displays various works, ranging from the works of artists associated with Ishikawa Prefecture to the antiques associated with the Maeda Family of the Kaga clan, which are its focus, to Japanese-style paintings, oil paintings and sculptures. It also houses a National Treasure, “Iro-e Kiji Koro (Incense burner in the shape of pheasant decorated with overglaze enamels),” by Nonomura Ninsei, and other important cultural properties. There are seven collection exhibition rooms, which are rotated regularly, to display different works. The café created by a patissier Hironobu Tsujiguchi is also very popular.

    A history museum located a three minute walk from the Kenrokuen Garden easily identifiable by its eye-catching red brick structure. This building was once used as an armory by the imperial army as well as a facility for the Kanazawa College of Art and has been designated a National Important Cultural Property. As its name indicates, the museum contains exhibits presenting the history and culture of Ishikawa Prefecture, and visitors can trace the eras of the area, from a reconstruction of a Jomon period dog based on excavated bones, to a recreation of a Showa period Japanese living room. The museum also actively engages in a variety of activities, including holding several planned and special exhibitions throughout the year as well as seminars and lectures by curators. In addition, the museum hosts tours of nearby historical sites and temples.

    The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa is housed in an imposing circular, glass-walled building, located in the center of Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The Museum is divided into an Exhibition Zone, for which there is an admission charge, and a Public Zone, with free admission. There are a wide variety of art installations and artworks everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. One particularly popular exhibit is Leandro Erlich’s “The Swimming Pool” (popularly known as “Leandro’s Pool”). From ground-level, it looks as though the people underneath are underwater; this experiential work creates opportunities for fascinating encounters between the people above and the people down below.

    The Kanazawa Noh Museum is located adjacent to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, on Prefectural Route 10 in 1 Chome, Hirosaka, Kanazawa City. The Museum collects and exhibits masks and costumes from the “Kaga Hosho” tradition (a style of Noh drama that developed in the Kaga Domain), which has been designated an Intangible Cultural Asset by Kanazawa City Government. The Hirosaka district, where the Museum is situated, has a strong association with Noh drama, as this is the district where the old Kanagawa Noh Theatre was located.

    A shopping center in Korinbo, the heart of Kanazawa. In addition to a basement level, floors one through four are connected by an atrium, giving them a bright and open atmosphere. The center is occupied by around 30 establishments, including cafes, food vendors, and stores selling knickknacks, accessories, and traditional crafts. The shopping center's outdoor plaza, with its large pyramidal light, is a useful meetup spot. The center is also replete with convenient underground parking, aiding a leisurely shopping experience.

    Located within the Ishikawa Prefectural History Museum grounds in the Dewa Town, Kanazawa City, the Kaga-Honda Museum has around 2,000 precious historical artifacts in its collections, including weapons and armor, old documents, relating to the Honda family, one of the “Hakka” (“eight clans”) families of leading retainers that served the Maeda family (who ruled the Kaga Domain) for generations. The Museum is a marvelous place to learn about the history of the Kaga Domain and about the samurai culture of the Edo period.

    Kanazawa, once the capital of Japan, has produced great numbers of pioneers in a wide variety of fields since the late Edo period. This museum introduces some of the most famous and celebrated of these personages. The standing exhibition on the second floor is divided into seven areas presenting the achievements and careers of people who have supported modern Japan. One of the areas features people requested by Kanazawa City elementary school students, and visitors can learn more about the things they have done and the way they lived. The museum also serves as a base for research concerning the great people of Kanazawa.

    The Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Traditional Arts and Crafts is dedicated to the collection of examples of Ishikawa’s handicraft traditions. The Museum is located next to the Kenroku-en garden (a popular tourist attraction), which can be accessed directly from the Museum’s West Entrance. Inside the Museum there are displays on 36 different traditional crafts, 10 of which are METI-designated Traditional Craft Industries. On Saturdays and Sundays, visitors can see demonstrations of various traditional crafts by expert craftspeople. The Museum also holds pottery-making experience activities and workshops of various kinds. The Museum is situated around 15 minutes’ drive from JR Kanazawa Station.

    A gallery and bookstore produced by the Hotchkiss advertising company. The first floor is a bookstore and the second is a gallery. Every three months, a different craftsperson or artist is chosen to be featured in the gallery. At the same time, books which influenced the artist up to the present time are sold on the first floor. The bookstore's lineup changes completely each time a new artist is featured.

    戦前の暮らしと戦後の暮らしに分かれて展示されており、戦前の様子を学んだり戦後の様子を懐かしむところだ。映像資料もいくつかあり、丁寧にみると面白い。驚いたことはファミコンが展示されており、自分の子どもが小さいときに遊んでいたものが博物館に並べられているとは自分の歳を思い知らされた。２階には体験コーナーもあり、子どもや孫と会話をしながら見学するのも楽しいかも知れない。
