    This specialty Japanese tea store and café was established in 1859, in Tatemachi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The store is inside a renovated townhouse, and the soothing color scheme of its tables and red nodate-gasa (umbrellas for open-air tea ceremony) make it a very peaceful space. Customers can enjoy their tea and sweets while looking out at the garden through the latticed windows. The most popular sweet is the Maverick Parfait, created from a staff meal. The store’s soft cream is an excellent product, found only in this long-established store, and made with home-roasted Kaga-bocha tea leaf powder. With its stone ground matcha powder, the matcha soft cream is also very popular.

The café serves simply flavored lunches incorporating old-fashioned yet familiar medicinal plants with a focus on organic, locally-grown vegetables. One of the most popular choices on the menu is the Hyakuyaku gozen set, which comes with a medicinal plant and tofu hamburg steak main dish. The café is only open for lunch.

    What a gem of a restaurant this was! Lots of healthy food on the menu and we enjoyed everything we ordered. Nicely spiced chicken burger, excellent apple ginger soda.

    A cosmetics shop located in the “Higashi Chaya District” in Higashiyama, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture which also has a café space. Situated inside a former teahouse designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the city of Kanazawa, the shop sells exclusive cosmetics made with local gold leaf as well as skin care products. Chaya Bijin has worked to create an atmosphere which harnesses the aesthetic senses of the area, including a register counter covered with gold leaf and a “beauty fountain” where customers are free to try a variety of cosmetics. The café space serves beautifying beverages such as vinegar drinks which alleviate fatigue and “bi no cha” beauty tea.

    Chaya Bijin is a pretty little boutique selling cosmetics, face cream, accessories with gold leaf (tiny dust of gold leaf). Worth the visit when you are in Kanazawa.

The café, a historic temple hall, has tables, chairs, and tatami seating as well, and here you can enjoy a cup of tea and a sweet. The matcha green tea sprinkled with gold dust, which comes with a small daily confection, is particularly popular. Other items offered by the café include Japanese sweets such as zenzai sweet bean soup and anmitsu syrup-covered sweet beans with cream, as well as coffee, tea, pancakes, and curry rice. The nearest station is Nomachi Station.

Yokan (Japanese sweet jelly bean paste) from in-house roasted cacao as well as gateau chocolat made from in-house roasted cacao, and in-house roasted coffee yokan using in-house roasted coffee can be enjoyed with coffee.

    Best coffee in Japan. Strong, hot and just the way we like it. We also had an excellent club sandwich and toasty pizza thing.

    Kureha is a teahouse where customers can relax and enjoy matcha from long-standing tea shops and the confections known as Jonamagashi, which are usually available only at fine traditional restaurants or at tea ceremonies. In the same building is a gallery with a collection of original accessories made from Kaga Yuzen dyed fabrics. Customers can try on Kaga Yuzen garments, because the venerable traditional clothing shop Eritora manages Kureha. Putting on a beautifully dyed garment, wandering around to admire the quaint streetscapes, and returning to the shop to enjoy the finest sweets is a fantastic experience. Kureha is located 16 minutes by car from the Kanazawa Higashi Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway.

The cafe interior is decorated with vivid red iron oxide painted walls with quiet touches of gold. The cafe's tableware was produced by Enishira, a company which carries gold leaf, Kaga mizuhiki cord work, and other traditional craft goods. Particularly popular menu selections include Japanese-style sweets like the cream zenzai red bean soup and the matcha powdered green tea shaved ice.

The shop's most popular product is its Kaga bocha twig tea, a style of tea created in Kaga in the Meiji period. Just the stems of karigane first-grade tea are carefully prepared to create a luxurious tea. The shop also makes ""wa-kocha"" Japanese-style Western black tea using Japanese-grown tea leaves. The shop's high class tea leaves are characterized by a uniquely sweet fragrance, a result of being grown amidst the lush, natural environment of Noto. The shop has a cafe space where you can drink fresh-brewed Kaga bocha and wa-kocha."

The cafe's unpretentious air, resembling a corner coffee shop in Seattle, is popular with locals as well as Japanese and international tourists. The shop is owned and operated by Saul, a Seatllite who moved here with his Japanese wife. Perhaps in part thanks to the friendly disposition of Saul and his wife, the cafe serves as a communication space for customers and is always bustling. Here you can enjoy lattes, cappuccinos, and other coffees made with Curio's own original special bean blend, as well as light meals and baked sweets. The authentic Seattle espresso is particularly recommended.
