This museum is a one-minute walk from Tateyama Station, the last stop on the Toyama Chihou Railway Tateyama Line. It features exhibits on the special geological, topographical, and biological features of Tateyama, as well as the history and natural environment of Tateyama caldera, the site of one of Japan's largest landslides. Its indoor exhibit hall features a number of exhibits from which visitors can learn about erosion control at Tateyama caldera in an easy-to-understand manner, including a diorama that recreates the view inside the caldera, as well as a simulation game. Real-time information on the Alpen Route is also on display.

Would have been a 5 stars place to visit if they had a bit more English there... Really nice museum, but it is a pity that there is very little English in there.

This museum is a 45-minute drive from JR Toyama Station. Located inside Ashikura Temple at the foot of Mt. Tateyama, the museum conducts and exhibits the results of comprehensive academic research into the relationship between the natural environment and people of Tateyama. The museum's massive 13-hectare grounds are divided into three zones; Kyokai (World of Teachings), Seikai (World of Holiness), and Yukai (World of Play). Each zone features a number of different facilities, including the Tenjikan Exhibit Hall and the Yobokan Hall. The museum's exhibits also include a bronze statue of Sakra designated as an important cultural property and a collection of items related the Tateyama faith designated as important tangible folk cultural property.

Tateyama was a major religious centre for over 1,300 years, and before the Tateyama religion began, people revered the mountains. Tateyama, Mt Fuji and Hakusan are the 3 holy mountains. People came...

    Toyama Nakaniikawa-gun Tateyamamachi Ashikuraji
This is one part of the dispersed museums making up the Tateyama Museum complex. This is the same ground that gave birth to the worship of Tateyama, and this museum recreates in three dimensions the Tateyama Mandala, an image handed down from the Heian period against the unchanging backdrop of the Tateyama range. It is made up of four sections: the earthly plane, the path of the sun, the heavens, and the path of dark, and each one is recreated in shape, sound, light, and aroma.

Toyama Areas

around-area-map

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
