  • Sakana no Eki Ikuji
    Shopping
Toyama Pref. Kurobeshi Ikuji Nakaku 265
This market is a 12-minute drive from Hokuriku Expressway's Kurobe Interchange. The market is comprised of two buildings; the Toretate-kan, which offers fresh fish and processed seafood, and the Dekitate-kan, which has restaurants and a take-out corner. At Chargrilling Restaurant Kokaito, diners can choose any of the fresh-caught seafood from Kurobe fishing port or Ikuji salted fish (a local delicacy made by the Ladies' Club of the JF Kurobe fishing cooperative) on offer and chargrill it themselves. We also recommend the local craft brew, Shozu Monogatari.

    Toyama Kurobe-shi Mikkaichi 1078-1
This shop combines the beauty of the changing seasons, and a tradition of flavor passed down since ages past. The Kurobe, a town famous for clean water, sweets made here are the products of skilled craftsmen. We highly recommend the Kazumi Apple Pie, made with apples from Uozu City's Kazumino district spreading apple orchards, and filled with elegant sweetness and a delicate sourness. They also offer dorayaki buns, gelatin desserts, walnut manju buns, and more, all made with select ingredients.

    Toyama Kurobe-shi
This venerable shop deals in Rausu kombu kelp. There is a history of migration between Hokkaido's Rausu, home of this kombu, and Ikuji in Kurobe City, Toyama Prefecture. This shop was opened in 1949, and is deeply tied to the development of kombu kelp harvesting port. It is filled with recommended products, like Yaki Rausu Kombu, which is made by roasting Rausu-harvested kelp, considered the king of kelps, or Rausu Kombu Udon made with coarse ground Rausu Kombu mixed in the traditionally hand-made noodles.

    Toyama Kurobe-shi Unazuki Onsen 252-1
This shop has been a loved local spot for some 70 years, and uses some of Japan's highest quality water, and incredible skill, to create tofu and sweets. Their tofu craftsman has 30 years of experience, and their individually made silk (soft curd) tofu is used in the ryokan hotels throughout Unazuki onsen village. In addition to their many types of tofu and fried foods, they also offer extremely popular handmade tofu pudding, and tofu fromage cheese. They also offer okara tarts, made with tofu dregs, by reservation only.

    Toyama Kurobe-shi Unazuki Onsen 294-3
This sweets shop is in Unazuki onsen. They wrap coarse azuki bean paste in two layers of Shintaisho glutinous rice mochi, which they then further wrap in pastry-use shiso leaf that has been steeped in syrup for over five years to make their famous treat Yu-no-Hana Goromo. Their popular products include Koshihikari Manju buns made with koshihikari rice grown in the clean water of Kurobe, and made with clean spring water pumped up 222 meters from below the Tateyama Mountain Range.

Toyama Areas

around-area-map

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
