The Takaoka Daibutsu (Takaoka Great Buddha) is a large statue of Amida Nyorai (the Amitabha Buddha) in a seated posture, approximately 16 meters high, located in the Hotoku-san Daibutsu-ji Temple near Takaoka Station in Toyama Prefecture. The circular halo that rises up behind the Buddha’s back makes this a particularly distinctive statue; it ranks alongside the Great Buddha of Nara and the Great Buddha of Kamakura as one of the “Three Great Buddhas of Japan.” The original statue and its replacement were both destroyed in fires; in 1933, local people built the third statue that visitors see today. Since it was first created, the Takaoka Daibutsu has become an iconic symbol of Takaoka; locals refer to with a mixture of respect and familiarity as “Daibuttsuan.”

In Toyama for 2-nights, with a couple of hours to spare before dinner; this proved to be sufficient time to make a detour to Takaoka to see the Great Buddha. It only takes about 17-mins to travel...

The Zuiryu-ji Temple is a temple in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture belonging to the Soto school of Zen Buddhism. The Temple was built by Maeda Toshitsune, the third lord of the Kaga Domain, to offer up prayers to the Buddha for the repose of the soul of his brother Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord of the Kaga Domain. The Butsu-den hall, Hatto (Lecture Hall) and San-mon gate have all been designated as National Treasures; the So-mon gate, Zen-do (Zen meditation hall), Taka-roka (High Corridor), Kairo (Gallery) and Dai-sado (Large Tea Hall) were the first Prefectural Important Cultural Properties to be designated as such by Toyama Prefectural Government. "This art museum a two-minute walk from the JR Himi Line's Etchu-Nakagawa Station features exhibits on the life and works of manga artist and Takaoka City native Fujiko F. Fujio. In the gallery, guests can read every page of ""Yokaijima"" (Phantom Island), a story book that Fujiko F. Fujio created by hand at the age of 14. The museum exhibits the artist's belongings, as well an area that shows how his original drawings compare with their final published versions. Other exhibits include a statue of Doraemon (one of Fujio's characters) made from Takaoka ceramic, a traditional industry of the region, as well as an original short animated film."

This museum houses a permanent exhibit on Takaoka's mikurumayama floats, which have been designated by the government as both important tangible and intangible folk cultural properties. Only five of these floats exist in Japan. The history of the floats is said to have begun when Maeda Toshinaga, the town founder of Takaoka, gave a coach used when Hideyoshi Toyotomi welcomed Emperor Goyozei to Jurakudai in 1588 to the people of Takaoka. The gorgeous floats are decorated with a variety of industrial arts including goldsmithing, lacquer work, dyeing, and weaving. The museum's first floor exhibits a mikurumayama float designated as an important tangible folk cultural property, as well as parts of mikurumayama floats. Its second floor features hands-on exhibits on the music that accompanies mikurumayama floats and on mechanical dolls.

At the Amaharashi Coast Quasi-National Park, visitors standing on the beach can enjoy spectacular views of the rocky islets offshore and of the majestic Tateyama Mountains in the distance that seem to float above Toyama Bay; every season brings its own unique scenery. The stretch of coastline that extends from the Amaharashi Coast to Matsudae-no-Nagahama in Himi City has been ranked as one of Japan’s “Top 100 White Sand and Green Pines Beaches” and as one of “Japan’s 100 Best Beaches.” Otomo no Yakamochi, the poet and compiler of the Man’yoshu poetry anthology, was deeply impressed by the scenery of the Amaharashi Coast; his many poems in praise of the area were a major factor in its becoming so famous.

"This temple belonging to the Jodo Shinshu Honganjiha sect of Shin Buddhism is located about a 15-minute drive from Takaoka-kita Interchange on the Noetsu Expressway. The temple has been designated as a national Important Cultural Property. It played a central role in the Etchu Ikko Ikki, a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist uprising that occurred during the warring states period. It also possesses many cultural assets such as ""rokkyoku isso,"" a painted folding screen depicting scenes in and around Kyoto. The temple is also known for its ""seven wonders,"" which consist of the fruitless gingko tree, the stone that fell from the sky, the pond that never dries, the monkey that holds up the roof, the pillar that wards off evil spirits, the flying dragon inkstone, and the three-leafed pine."

Ever since, it has collected and displayed photography related materials, and served as a gallery displaying the work of photographers at the front lines of the artform. This merchant's house was designated an Important Cultural Asset in 1994 as the best of Takaoka's earthen-walled townhouses in terms of scale, quality, and level of preservation. The walls are finished with black plaster, and the second floor has a set of double doors. The roof has a boxed ridge, as well, and all of these are hallmarks of Takaoka earthen-walled town house construction. The Sugano family built a vast family fortune from the beginning of the Meiji period when the fifth generation head, Denemon, began trading on routes to Hokkaido.

This home belonged to the Akimoto family, who prospered in the shipping business from before the early 1800s, and was considered as very old minka home. Its rare architectural style reflects the old fashioned glory of the Kitamaebune shipping families, and in 1998 it was designated a Takaoka City Cultural Asset. The main building has a gabled roof, with some sections extending to a second floor with a main entrance on the gabled side, with the beams, struts, and black walls creating a beautiful Azumadachi style architecture. Inside, they display artifacts from the house's heyday to help recall those grander times.
