    The Fossa Magna Museum opened 1994 is a museum about rocks for learning about our natural environment and resources, as provided by the Earth across ages and geological eras. In the six-room exhibition area, you can see fossils and beautiful ores (jade) of Itoigawa River. Approximately 10 minutes by car via Itoigawa Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway.

  • Takada Castle Site Park

    Takada Park was built on the site of what was formerly Takada Castle, a castle built as a residence for Tokugawa Tadateru, the sixth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu; the entire Park has been designated as an official Historic Site by Niigata Prefectural Government. A variety of cultural and sporting facilities are located within Takada Park, including the reconstructed Sanju-yagura (three-tiered tower) of the old Takada Castle, the Castle Museum, the Kobayashi Kokei Memorial Museum of Art, Takada Library, and the Mimei Ogawa Literature Museum (located inside the Library), making the Park a favorite place for local residents to spend their leisure time. With around 4,000 cherry trees, Takada Park is also a popular spot for viewing the cherry blossom in spring. Takada Park is located around eight- minute drive from Takada Station on the Myoko Haneuma Line.

    This museum located at the bottom of the former site of Kasugayama Castle is a 20-minute walk from Kasugayama Station on the Echigo Tokimeki Railway. The mud-colored building, built in the style of Japanese-style homes, is a place where Jomon Period artifacts unearthed in Joetsu City are researched, stored, and exhibited. Guests can watch the museum's staff catalog and restore artifacts or try their hand at a number of activities including making magatama (an ancient style of curved beads). Due to its location close to Kasugayama Castle, the castle of the famous warring states period warlord Uesugi Kenshin, it is also the headquarters of the Uesugi Omotenashi Bushotai, a group of historical reenactors.

    日本百名城巡りの一環として初めて行きました。遺跡の発掘をしている事務所とおもっていたら、春日山城の展示をやっていました。上杉謙信について立派な展示があり、年表やイラストを交え分かりやすかったです。しかも入場無料なのがすごいですね

    A heated indoor pool facility adjoining Region Plaza Joetsu, a recreation facility built to promote the health and wellbeing of local residents. A 25-meter-long practice course pool, children’s pool, and three-meter-deep diving pool can be used year-round. The facility’s 80-meter-long spiral waterslide is extremely popular with children. During the summer vacation period, occasionally a line of children waiting to go down the slide forms. From early July through August, an on-site ice arena is turned into a gigantic pool which can be freely swum around in.

    火打山登山口から近いので前泊で利用しました。芝生の平地が多くテントは張りやすかった。管理事務所内に水洗トイレがあって24時間利用できました。 夜中の星空が印象的でした。

    This amusement park is located adjacent to Myoko Sunshine Hotel and Myoko Sunshine Golf Club. There are over 20 different types of attractions such as Sky Jet and Go Karting that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. The park is open from April to early November every year, and in April there is Myoko Tenku Sakura, which is a free-entry opening event where visitors can look down upon 1,500 cherry trees from the Ferris wheel.

    Lavender Beach is part of Omi Coast Geosite, about a 14-minute walk from Itoigawa Station in the city of Itoigawa, Niigata Prefecture. The beach gets its name from the lavender-colored jade that can be found there. The open area near the beach contains the statue of Nunakawa-Hime, a ruler in Jomon Period, and the relief that portray the processing steps of jade. Beachcombers can find all kinds of stones other than jade, and it is a great place to find a unique stone for one's self.

    The Otate was a compound the mighty lord Uesugi Kenshin built for Kanto shogun deputy Uesugi Norimasa when the latter fled to Echigo after he was defeated by Hojo Ujiyasu, then-lord of Odawara Castle. It is believed that it was also used as a government office after Kenshin later inherited the post of Kanto shogun deputy. The compound is thought to have been vast, equivalent in area to 1. 6 Tokyo Domes, but today only its heart remains as a park. The compound was also the site of the Siege of Otate, a great uprising which tore Echigo Province in two as two men fought to succeed as the head of the Uesugi clan after Kenshin’s sudden demise.

    The Sasagamine Highland, sprawling 1,300 meters above sea level, is a nature-rich, cloud top paradise. The nature trails on the highland enable visitors to cross Lake Otomi’s Sasagamine Dam and walk amidst huge birches and beeches, wetlands and seasonal flowers. 9. 6 kilometers in total length, the natural beauty- and plant life-rich trails can be walked in about four and a half hours. Some of the many highlights include the ruins of a former sawmill as well as scenic lookouts. The trails have also received certification as a Forest Therapy Road, a forested area which science has shown has a relaxing effect on visitors.

Naoetsu Beach Resort is located around 10-minute drive from the Joetsu Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway.

    With gentle waves and high-quality water, this beach swimming area is perfect for everyone to enjoy from children to the elderly. It is not only one of the best shoal beaches in the Hokuriku region but has historical significance as well. Since the Meiji period it has been used for swimming training for the military and legend states that when Emperor Juntoku was travelling from the capital to Sado Island he paused here transfixed by the beauty of the setting sun. There are nearby lodgings and dressing rooms as well as beachside cafes and free shower facilities. It's about one-minute on foot from Tanihama Station on the Nihonkai Hisui Line or can also be easily accessed by car as it is 10-minutes away from the Nadachi-Tanihama Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway.

    The Benten-iwa Rock and the red handrails are key features of this beach. It's a 20-minute walk from Nou Station on the Nihonkai Hisui Line. You can also get there by car going five-minutes north from the Nou Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway. The shallows are surrounded by concrete blocks, perfect for small children to enjoy. BBQ facilities are also available making this popular beach area fun for everyone from adults to kids. The Sea Festival is held every year on Marine Day. Come out and experience banana boats and other marine sports as well as game tournaments.

    This science museum sets up each of its exhibitions with models and mini games, according to themes such as Human Science and Snow Science. It is located in Region Plaza Joetsu, just off the Hokuriku Expressway's Joetsu interchange. The museum holds not only exhibitions, but also events such as science theaters and nature observation classrooms, which are of great interest to children. There are also fun learning experiences for children, such as a moving Tyrannosaurus robot and a low temperature experience room, where the room's temperature can be lowered to minus 30 degrees.

    A pebble beach with clear blue waters. The crystal-like waters make this a popular marine leisure spot for activities such as scuba diving and fishing. Amongst the many types of pebbles that line the shore you can find small bits of jade. People use the available jade exploration kits to search for jade in the rocks. The beach is a 10-minute walk from Oyashirazu Station or a two-minute drive from the Oyashirazu Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway. A 400-spot parking lot is available. There are plenty of ways to enjoy yourself besides the sea such as the roadside station Oyashirazu Pier Park, or day-trip hot spring facilities.

    This campsite located inside of beautiful Chubusangaku National Park has 35 tent sites and a capacity of 200 campers. It is also fully equipped with cooking facilities and toilets. The Renge Nature Trail (Renge no Mori Shizen-yuhodo) that starts here takes roughly two hours to complete and is known for its beautiful autumn foliage. The campsite is located next to Remge Onsen Lodge (Hakubadake Renge Onsen Lodge), which is popular for its four open-air baths each with a different source and their great views of the Northern Japan Alps, which includes Mt. Yukikuradake, Mt. Asahidake, and Mt. Gorinzan. The campsite is open from early July to mid-October each year and closes during winter.
