  • Awashima Island

    This small island measuring approximately ten square kilometers floats in the Sea of Japan in the northern reaches of Niigata Prefecture. There are some amazing sights to be had despite from the wonderful beach front to the east of 265-meter-tall Mt. Koshibayama, to the sheer precipice dropping off its western face. There are plenty of camp-grounds and lots of ways to enjoy getting in touch with nature such as rental bicycles that you can use to get around the island. To get to Awashima Island you can take a ferry from either Niigata Port or Iwafune Port. Awashima is known for its Wappa, a circular bento lunch box, into which they put Isou rock-fish and miso before cooking it over red-hot stones in a dish called Wappani. Another popular local dish is Imodako, which is a mix of local potatoes and octopus cooked together.
  • Kangawa Beach

    This is the largest beach in Sanpoku district, Murakami City and it is a 10-minute walk from JR Echigo-Kangawa Station on the Uetsu Main Line. While not shallow, it stands out for its beautiful scenery made by the white sandy beach and emerald waters. Beach umbrellas are available for rent along with dressing rooms and showers which are available for a fee. You can BBQ on the beach and there is space for motor home camping near the parking lot. Lifeguards are on duty from mid-July to mid-August.

    This manju store is located in the Tsukioka hot spring area in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture. The ingredients, koshi an strained bean paste, tsubu an mashed bean paste, shiro an white bean paste and kimi an made with an ample amount of egg yolk, of these four different types of Ganso Tsukioka manju are carefully selected, while retaining the same nostalgic taste. Also available here, are pie manju, with an unusual center of marron and almond paste in flaky pie dough, roasted sweet potato manju, and Tsukioka Daifuku manju, with an impressive marriage of three flavors-mochi on the outside, fresh cream in the middle, and matcha green tea paste or cocoa paste.

    月岡温泉には、何軒か温泉まんじゅうを売っている店がある。朝早くから開いているので、チェックアウトする時間にでも、お土産に買える。1セット580円箱入り(5ケだったか)を購入。粒あんや色んな味が楽しめて美味しかった。

  • Ichishima Sake Brewery Inc.

    This venerable sake brewery is located nearby Isoshirei-jinja Shrine in Shibata City. Visitors can tour the brewery without a reservation. The brewery has a collection of many artifacts that tell the story of their 200 years in the sake-making business. It exhibits a variety of vintage brewing equipment and containers, including a large steaming pot, yeast barrels, brewing pot, tubs for straining sake, tokkuri (sake serving bottles), iwaidaru (celebratory kegs), and more. The brewery's onsite sake shop, Muso, always has seven to eight different products available for free tastings or for purchase, such as their popular daiginjo (top-quality sake made with heavily-milled rice) and their refreshing umeshu (plum wine) made with sake.
  • Shibata Castle Park

    This park is a 15-minute drive from the Seiro-Shibata Interchange on the Nihonkai-Tohoku Expressway and is the site of Shibata Castle. It is a famous place to come during cherry blossom season with 260 Yoshino cherry trees and another 30 double-flowered cherries trees growing on the grounds. Every year mid-April when the cherry trees are blooming the flowers and the castle are lit up at night providing a magical view. Also, every January there is a zoni (rice cake soup) making event drawing traditional chefs from throughout the country.
  • Ijimino Park

    This park is a 10-minute drive from JR Shibata Station and can be enjoyed year-round no matter the season. During cherry blossom season the blossoms encircle Masugata pond and the pond can also be used for athletic activities and fishing. During the summer 600 thousand irises bloom covering 300 breeds and the Shibata Iris Festival always draws lots of tourists. In the fall the mountains surrounding Ijimino Park are ablaze with autumn colors and during the winter swans migrate to the park.
  • Senami Sasagawa-Nagare Awashima Prefectural Nature Park

    This nature park is in the center of Sasagawanagare. The coastline looks out at the Sea of Japan and stretches almost 80 kilometers from Senami Hotsprings in Murakami City to the edge of Yamagata, including Awashima Island. It's characterized by its dynamic coastline as created by the rough crashing waves. Sasagawanagare has also been designated as one of the country's national natural treasures, famous for a series of giant oddly shaped boulders scattered along the coastline. Along the Senami coastline you'll find lots of recreation areas for tourists including hot spring baths, beaches, and campgrounds. Also, Awashima Island, which floats almost 20 kilometers off shore of Sasagawanagare, is home to the streaked shearwater and is famous as a fishing location for sea bream.
  • Nagaike Ikoi no Mori Park

    This park is a five-minute drive from Nakajo Interchange. The nature conservation-themed park, most of which is inside either the Forest Zone that surrounds Nagaike Pond or the Flower Garden Zone where tulips and rapeseed flowers bloom, is a place for people to learn, play, and rest. The park's facilities include a cooking area for barbeques and cookouts, a promenade for forest bathing, a rest area where you can enjoy bird songs and the changing scenery of Japan's four seasons, and a farmer's market that offers fresh local produce, flowers, and processed foods. The park hosts a Tulip Festival when its tulips bloom in mid-April.
