Nigata Pref. Nigatashi Chuou-ku Kamiokawamaedori 6-1202
This shopping district, also known as Ninjo Yokocho, is located approximately ten minutes by car from the JR Niigata Station's Bandai Exit. It was established in 1951, and is one of Niigata City's oldest shopping districts. It remains unchanged from that time, and is well-loved by locals, who call it Niigata's Kitchen. The shops here range from old-fashioned reasonably priced shops to modern fashionable shops, dealing in everything from fresh foods to dried foods, accessories and miscellaneous goods. There is also the Hamayaki store, which cooks seasonal fish with plenty of fat at the shop front, the aroma drifting out to the street to whet the appetite of passers-by. There are also ramen shops as well as many other restaurants.

This is a specialty Russian chocolate store, which is a rarity in Japan. It is located on Prefectural Route 1, west of the JR Niigata Station. Russian chocolate incorporates Russian-style cream Pomadka, nuts and Russian-style jelly, among other ingredients. The chocolate is packed in a Matryoshka-design container, which is not only perfect as a souvenir, but also as a gift for the Obon Lantern Festival. The chocolate sold here is made with a recipe passed down from the previous owner, Kiyoshi Matsumura, who learned it from a Russian chocolatier in 1930. The chocolate has been made in the same way ever since.

This fresh fish center covers a large area in Kashiwazaki, facing the Sea of Japan. It has one of the largest sales floors in Japan with an abundance of fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan. It can be easily accessed, either by a 20-minute walk east, along National Route 8, from JR Omigawa Station, or alternatively, by car from the Hokuriku Expressway Yoneyama Interchange.

This manju store is located in the Tsukioka hot spring area in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture. The ingredients, koshi an strained bean paste, tsubu an mashed bean paste, shiro an white bean paste and kimi an made with an ample amount of egg yolk, of these four different types of Ganso Tsukioka manju are carefully selected, while retaining the same nostalgic taste. Also available here, are pie manju, with an unusual center of marron and almond paste in flaky pie dough, roasted sweet potato manju, and Tsukioka Daifuku manju, with an impressive marriage of three flavors-mochi on the outside, fresh cream in the middle, and matcha green tea paste or cocoa paste.

This morning market beloved by locals is held on San Hachi Dori Street, a 15-minute walk from Naoetsu Station. During the market, the broad street is lined end-from-end with vendors offering items such as fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh, locally-caught fish and unusual processed seafoods. Started by the local young persons' association? in 1911, the market was originally held on dates with a 5 or 9 but changed the next year to being held on dates with a 3 or 8, which it has stayed ever since. The market is popular for being a place where you can buy Joetsu's famous Sasa-ame sweet or pickles hand-made by local farmers.

This bakery is located inside Niigata Station. Opened in 1983 it was Japan's first bakery turned cafe. One of their most popular menu items is their specialty melon-pan buns with its fluffy interior and crispy cookie dough shell. Also popular are the wiener rolls, their slow cooked red-bean paste croissant, and a variety of seasonal limited edition sweet and savory pastries. Any of the bakery items can be enjoyed in the cafe area along with additions such as soups or salads.

This seafood market on National Route 8 is located in Kamomegahana, one of the Eight Views of Fukuura, the most scenic area in Niigata Prefecture. The market is part of a famous coastal roadside station that has attracted visitors for decades. The lively market is stocked with fresh seafood caught in the Sea of Japan, as well as seasonal seafood from all across Japan. We especially recommend their red snow crab. Their bright red shells are sure to draw the eyes of customers. Their rich, unique, and addictive flavor make up for the modest amount of meat they contain. Another of the market's flagship items is its ishirizuke, which is made by pickling dried squid in a fermented squid sauce.
