This food theme park, which opened in the Shin-Yokohama district in 1994, was built around the concept of being able to eat ramen from all over the country without having to fly there. The interior, which recreates a Showa-period retro townscape, hosts famous ramen shops from not just all over Japan but from around the world. Attractions other than eating ramen include a gallery featuring exhibits on the history of ramen, a museum shop that offers souvenir ramen kits, a retro candy shop, events including live music, street performances, and picture story shows, and more. It is located a five-minute walk from JR Shin-Yokohama Station.

This is a small museum that re-creates the old Tokyo alleys full of ramen shops. There is some text information about ramen and its history but most of it is in Japanese only. It takes 10-15 minutes...

Located around five minutes’ walk from JR Tsurumi Station in Yokohama City, the Daihonzan Sojiji Temple is one of the two head temples of the Soto Zen Buddhism. This museum is located in the Tsuzuki Ward of Yokohama City. One can learn about the history of Yokohama here. Documents specializing on the City of Yokohama prior to the port was opening are collected and displayed. Outside the museum is the Otsuka/Saikachido Relics Park where one can see historic dwellings on display. The closest station is the Center Kita Station on the Yokohama Municipal Subway.

The title is a play on the shape of the museum; it is a round building with alcoves for each time period; jomon (perhistoric), yayoi (agricultural) age and so on, all to the modern age. In the middle...

This shrine is located in Morookacho Town, Kohoku Ward, Yokohama City, and was founded in 724 by the sacred hermit, Zenju. Many of the worshippers come requesting victory, since the shrine crest is the same “Yatagarasu” found on Japan’s national soccer team uniform. “Soccer charms” are sold here as well. Additionally, there is a local museum which displays artifacts from the Jomon period unearthed from the mountain behind the shrine precinct.

"This Shinto shrine is located right in front of the Maekawa jinja mae bus stop and is also a seven-minute walk from Tana Station as well as 15 minutes from Aobadai Station. The shrine was built in 1187 by Inage Shigenari, lord of Masugata Castle, after he received a divine message in a dream. The shrine is dedicated to Yamato Takeru, who took the form of a swan, and thus in the past it was known as ""Swan Maekawa Shrine."" The shrine famously possesses a huge nobori flag said to be the largest in Japan which is stored in a small building; a replica the same size as the original is flown next to the main shrine. The shrine holds all manner of Shinto events, including ceremonies to pray for a safe delivery, weddings, and funerals. There is also a sacred rock pile on the grounds that is said to grant safe childbirth."

"This Soto Zen Buddhist temple is located a three-minute walk from the Nishi-terao-kenkoji-mae bus stop a 15-minute ride from Tsurumi Station on the Yokohama Municipal Bus. Built in 1560 by Suwamikawanokami Umanosuke, fifth lord of Terao Castle and servant to the Odawara Hojo clan, the temple was the family temple of the Suwa clan. The temple's emblem is still the ""Suwa mulberry,"" the informal crest of the Suwa clan. The temple has a bamboo forest-encircled belfry, and on New Year's Eve the temple holds a stunning traditional event in which the bell is rung 108 times as thousands of lights light up the grounds."

  • Tsunashima Suwa Shrine

    Kanagawa Yokohama-shi Kohoku-ku Tsunashima Higashi 2-10-1
This Shinto shrine is located a five-minute walk from Tsunashima Station and its approach is also right in front of the Chofukuji mae bus stop. It is believed the shrine was built during the Eiroku era (1558-1570) by a vassal of the Takeda clan to house the spirit of a god ritually transferred from Suwa Taisha Shrine in Shinano Province (now Nagano Prefecture). The god of the shrine is Takeminakata-no-Mikoto, a mighty god of war, bravery, and competition; accordingly, sumo competitions were once held at the shrine that attracted men boasting of their strength from across Musashi Province (now part of Saitama Prefecture, Tokyo, and Kanagawa Prefecture). In most years, the shrine holds its Suwa Shrine Festival on the last Saturday and Sunday in August; one of the largest events in the city, during the festival, many portable shrines and their carriers gather on the grounds. Other festival highlights include night stalls and an Awa Odori dance.

Kanagawa Areas

around-area-map

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
