Located in the Asahi Ward of Yokohama City, Zoorasia (Yokohama Zoological Gardens) is a zoo inspired by the vision of “Symbiosis of Life and Harmony with Nature.” Zoorasia covers a total area of approximately 53.3 hectares, making it Japan’s largest zoo. The name “Zoorasia” (combing “Zoo” and “Eurasia”) reflects the large size of the zoo, comparing it (tongue-in-cheek) to the size of the Eurasian continent. The zoo is divided into eight zones based on climatic and geographic conditions in different parts of the world, recreating the kinds of environment in which the animals live in the wild. Every summer, the zoo stays open in the evening as “Night Zoorasia”; public response to this initiative has been very positive.

This zoo is located a three-minute walk from the Makigaharaoike bus stop and 15 minutes from Futamatagawa Station. Situated on the north side of Children's Natural Park near the picnic field, this zoo is designed to be a place which is open and accessible to families with small children. There's a petting zoo which is open for three sessions a day where children can play with chickens, guinea pigs, mice, and other animals. When the zoo is particularly crowded, petting zoo time may be limited. Visitors can also see Goishi chabo chickens, a domestic Japanese chicken breed now designated a National Natural Monument, up close in the zoo's Japanese chicken house.

Kanagawa Areas

around-area-map

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
