The Sankeien garden is an extensive garden located in the Honmoku district of Southeast Yokohama, looking out over Tokyo Bay. The garden was created by Hara Sankei (Hara Tomitaro), an entrepreneur who made a fortune as a silk trader. Within the Sankeien, historic buildings relocated from Kyoto, Kamakura etc. have been skillfully positioned for best visual effect; the Sankeien now contains 10 buildings that have been designated as National Important Cultural Properties, and three that have been designated as Tangible Cultural Properties by Yokohama City Government. During Hara Sankei’s lifetime, the Sankeien garden played an important role in the cultivation and supporting of avant-garde artists; some of the classic works of modern Nihonga painting—including Maeda Seison’s “The Uprising of Enryaku-ji Monks” and Yokoyama Taikan’s “Ryuin”—were painted here.

I have a yearly pass that’s truly one of the treasure of Yokohama. I would would recommend Visiting at different times of year.

Harbor View Park is famous for the view of the port and Yokohama Bay Bridge spreading out beneath your eyes from the observatory and is also the most well-known place for roses. An area which was the rose garden up until then was reopened as the English Rose Garden in 2016 and various roses and plants now rush into bloom throughout the seasons against the background of the English building. It is about three minutes’ walk from Exit 6 at Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Tokyu Minatomirai Line.

The Yokohama Museum of Tin Toys is run by tin toy collector Teruhisa Kitahara. The building is an old remodeled mission building, and is found walking toward the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery from Minatonomieruoka Park. The museum displays around 3,000 tin toys made from the 1890s to the 1960s, primarily in Japan. They say the movie Toy Story was inspired here, after a visit by the director John Lasseter.

About 30 minutes from central Tokyo and a wonderful place for the tin toy lover. Great displays and minimum admission charge. Well worth the trip

This sea fishing park in Naka Ward, Yokohama is a leisure spot where you can catch various kinds of fish whatever the season. You fish from the piers and a high handrail is installed all the way around. There's a parking lot on the premises, as well as Daikoku Ryokuchi Park, a shop, and a restaurant. Ryokuchi Park has a sweeping view of Tokyo Bay, as well as Kawasaki, Tokyo, and the Boso Peninsula; the view is so good that some come just to take in the landscape.

This museum is near Minato-no-Mieru Oka Park in the Yamate-cho district of Naka Ward, Yokohama City. It was built in 1980 as part of commemorations for the 50th anniversary of Iwasaki Gakuen's Yokohama Yousai Gakuin (present-day Yokohama f College). You can find exhibits about clothing history and related crafts and painting including models of clothing silhouettes from ancient Egypt to the present. In addition, it also houses materials related to the Goethe Theater, Japan's first Western-style theater that was built in Yokohama in the Meiji period.

The Iwasaki Museum is a fairly small and rather eclectic collection of items located in the old diplomatic area of Yokohama. There is a nice collection of historic clothing, including a series of...

Kanagawa Areas

around-area-map

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
