    Jogenro is a well-established Shanghai cuisine restaurant founded in 1955, with over 300 menu items, ranging from lou cai, a traditional Shanghai dish, seasonal dishes using seasonal ingredients and xin cai, which is a new modern dish, dim sim to desserts. Inside the restaurant, you can experience a modern Shanghai atmosphere. It is three minutes’ walk from Exit 2 at Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Tokyu Minatomirai Line.

    Shatenki Nigouten is a specialty Chinese porridge restaurant founded in 1951, and famous for a Chinese porridge in which raw rice as well as dried oysters, dried scallops and a whole chicken are stewed for four hours. It is five minutes’ walk from Exit 2 at Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Tokyu Minatomirai Line.

    So authentic and yummy but reasonable. You need to go early in the morning, otherwise you end up waiting outside for a rather long time.

    Venerable Szechuan restaurant Jukei Hanten opened in 1959 and still offers authentic Szechuan cuisine made the old fashioned way. The Honkan location is currently under renovation and plans to reopen in fall of 2018. (Reopened October 10). Its shop that is two buildings down from the Honkan is open. It’s located two minutes’ walk from Minatomirai Line Motomachi-Chukagai Station Exit 2.

Chinese rice porridge is made starting with uncooked rice combined with dried scallops, whole chickens, and other ingredients slow-stewed together over a period of several hours. Shatenki adds French salt to give the porridge depth, revealing a dedication to care and choice ingredients. Particularly recommended is the restaurant’s stamina-giving century egg rice porridge. The restaurant’s xiaolongbao, jade green jiaozi, and all its dim sum dishes are handmade.

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
