"This Nichiren Buddhist temple is located a one-minute walk from Keikyu Minamiota Station. Famously known as the ""Hariti of Ota,"" the temple enshrines a statue of Kishimojin said to have once been kept in the inner palace in the Edo period. The temple's large main temple building escaped destruction during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 as well as the bombing of Yokohama and famously played a significant role as an accommodation space for victims after these events. The view from the vicinity of the temple's huge statue of the monk Nichiren, which stands on a rise, is spectacular. Visitors can get a sweeping view encompassing the Kannai and Yamashita-cho districts."

The giant, white statue of Kannon is formally known as the Byakui Kannon (“White-robed Kannon”) and is actually a bust rather than a full figure. Construction began in 1927 and, after being interrupted by the Great Depression, was completed in 1960. The bust enshrines mortuary tablets dedicated to Kamakura citizens who have fallen in battle, and each year a memorial service is held to comfort their souls. The Ofuna Kannon-ji, the temple on whose grounds the statue stands, is a direct branch temple of the Soji-ji Temple, the head temple of Soto Buddhism. The Ofuna Kannon-ji Temple’s principal object of worship is a figure of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.

A Jishu Buddhist temple, due to the numerous rhododendrons on the temple’s grounds, it is also known as the Shakunage-dera (Rhododendron Temple). In the Edo period, the area was a community for some of Japan’s Hidden Christians, and the Kosho-ji Temple helped to protect them. Even today, the Nakagawa Cross, family crest of the Christian Nakagawa samurai clan, still decorates the temple’s Gate. A small stone shrine dedicated to Oshabuki sama, god of coughing, stands near the Mountain Gate, and it is said that one’s coughing will stop if one prays to the shrine.

The temple is located along Prefectural Route 732 to the south of the Hakone Yumoto Hot-Spring Town.
