This battleship became a flagship of the Combined Fleet in December 1902. It was restored by the Mikasa Preservation Society in 1958 through domestic and international donations and government grants and was opened to the public for viewing. They have both 30 and 60-minute viewing plans available, as well as a plan for groups of 10 or more. Onboard you can learn about the history of the Mikasa and the warfare through a variety of displays that include items like a 36 radiotelegraph, 15-centimeter secondary battery operation room, and documents written in the hand of staff officer Akiyama Saneyuki. You can reach it by taking the Mikasa Junkan Bus from Keiyu Yokosuka-Chuo Station to the Mikasa Koen Stop.

Lots of interesting information and can pretty much access most of the ship. At only ¥600 (£~4) for adults its definitely worth it. Theres also a nice park located to the side.

It is a museum built on the banks of Hakone’s Lake Ashi. Since the museum opened in 1988, its collection with its focus on contemporary Japanese paintings has surpassed 4,000 pieces and even now continues to increase. The museum is among the first to collect and exhibit works by not just famous artists but also works by artists who show promise for the future. From the one-sided 50-meter-wide picture window which stretches out inside the building, one can look out over the large panorama of Lake Ashi, Hakone. You can also enjoy tea and desserts from precious fine art handicraft serving dishes by Koji Ishii and Ryo Mikami in the museum’s “Kisetsufu” (Seasonal Wind) tea lounge.

A very nice site and building. Note-the museum is open at 9am, cafe at 10. A limited amount of artwork on display and much of it not particularly impressive.

This is the most historical museum in Hakone. The museum exhibition mainly focuses on Japanese “Yakimono” (earthenware) from the Jomon period through to the Edo period such as vases and pots produced from the Kamakura through to the Muromachi period in the six sites where the production of ceramic ware began in ancient Japan. On the grounds the scenery can be enjoyed from season to season as there are such attractions as the “moss garden” which is colored with moss and autumn colors, “the Japanese clover path” which is at its best in September and also the Chinese style “bamboo garden”. It is also famous for its autumnal leaf display, especially in November when the garden’s leaves change color all at once.

Lovely historical pottery and ceramics. Not big but thoughtful, well displayed pieces. The big surprise is the exquisite garden surrounding it. The moss garden especially.

According to legend, prior to the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate by Minamoto no Yoritomo, an Inari spirit (in the form of a white fox) appeared to Yoritomo in a dream and told him the best time to launch an attack on his enemies the Heike clan. Following this advice, Yoritomo succeeded in crushing the Heike and became the first Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate. In gratitude, Yoritomo had the Sasuke Inari Shrine built. Due to the influence of this legend, worshipping at the Sasuke Inari Shrine is believed to be helpful for one’s work and future career prospects.

Mitsubishi Minatomirai Industrial Museum established in 1994 is a place you can learn about the present and future of science technologies which there is little opportunity to experience in daily life through fun hands-on displays. It introduces the most advanced technology using the real thing or large-scale models. Founded in 1281, the Jochi-ji Temple ranks fourth among the “Five Mountains of Kamakura” (i.e. the five most prestigious temples in Kamakura). According to tradition, the temple was built in commemoration of Hojo Munemasa (the third son of Hojo Tokiyori), who died young. At the entrance to the temple precincts is the famous “Well of Sweet Dew,” one of the “Ten Wells of Kamakura.” The San-mon (main gate) has a rare Chinese-style bell-tower; the Jochi-ji Temple is the only temple in Kamakura where this kind of bell-tower can be seen.

Lovely peaceful zen temple nestling in the mountainside above the main road in Kita-Kamakura. Beautiful grounds. A little gem.
