    Tokyo Shinjuku-ku Nishi-waseda 3-5
"This traditional Japanese strolling garden built around a central pond is the only one of its kind to be operated by Shinjuku Ward. The site was originally a villa belonging to the Shimizu-Tokugawa family, and the garden which you can visit today is the same one originally created for this estate. ""Kansenen"" literally translates to ""Sweet Spring Garden,"" a name it is said to have been given because the waters of the spring which wells up on the site are perfect for making delicious tea. Popular as a Japanese garden which is easily accessible, the grounds are overflowing with natural, seasonal beauty, including azaleas and hydrangeas, new spring greenery, and fall foliage. In a wintertime tradition in Shinjuku, staff employed by the ward erect stunning yukizuri rope cages, a Japanese horticulture technique designed to protect trees from heavy snows."

This park was originally a reserve for hunting and falconry for the shogunate. As such it was off-limits to the rest of the population. A road runs through the center of the park, splitting it into a western section with a mixed forest of konara oaks and sudajii chinquapins and an eastern section with a large pond. There is a spring-fed pond at the center of the park with views of old Musashino. It used to be a well-known spot for viewing fireflies. They still breed a variety of fireflies there and hold events like the Firefly Viewing Night at the end of July. The event is so popular that numbered tickets are issued.

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
