A long standing sensu folding fan and uchiwa handheld fan shop located a six minute walk from Tokyo Metro Mitsukoshimae Station. The shop was founded by Ibaya Kanzaemon, a Hamamatsu merchant who came to old Edo together with the mighty shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The shop has carried uchiwa fans decorated with ukiyoe woodblock prints since the late Edo period; having served as a print publisher for such renowned artists as Utagawa Toyokuni, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and Hiroshige, this shop in fact invented the idea of incorporating prints into these handheld fans. The shop still sells products bearing reprints of these famous artists' works today. The shop also has decorative sensu folding fans created with prints by artists such as Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Utamaro, which make perfect souvenirs or presents. The shop's uchiwa combining works by Hiroshige with the popular cartoon character Doraemon are also fun.

Tokyo Areas

around-area-map

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
