According to legend, long ago when the Tsukiji area was all ocean, efforts were being made to reclaim the land, but it was extremely difficult. Then, a sacred object shining with light was spotted floating on the ocean, and it was known that it was inhabited by the spirit of Inari Okami, the fox god. This Shinto shrine was built to house that sacred object, and after it was completed the construction work proceeded apace and the land was reclaimed from the sea. Today, it is said the shrine still provides protection from disasters and dangerous waves. The current main shrine building was the last to be constructed in eastern Japan in the pre-war period.

just steps away from the fish market is an island of peace. A nice little shrine. Local feel and is very quiet despite being so close to the market.

"Sannomaru Shozokan (The Museum of the Imperial Collections) is located within the Imperial Palace East Garden, and is managed by the Imperial Household Agency; it is around five minutes' walk from Exit C13a of Otemachi subway station. The museum was established to preserve and manage paintings, calligraphy, handicrafts and other works of art that have been donated to the nation by successive generations of the Imperial Family, and to put these art-works on display to the general public. This is a Shinto shrine located in Yushima in Bunkyo City and is representative of an Edo-Tokyo Tenmangu Shrine. It is said that this shrine was built in 458 A.D. by imperial command of Emperor Yuraku in order to enshrine Ameno-tajikaraono-mikoto as a deity. Later in the Nanboku-cho period, Sugawara Michizane was also enshrined. As the Shinto god of scholarship, many students preparing for exams pay homage at the shrine. The precincts are so elegant, and they were the subject of works by the ukiyo-e artist, Utagawa Hiroshige. From early February at the Japanese plum blossom festival (“Ume Matsuri”), the Japanese plums are magnificent in full bloom on the grounds and the festival is busy with sightseers.
