A Shinto shrine located a two-minute walk from Shimbashi Station in 2 Chome Shimbashi, Minato City, Tokyo. The shrine was originally built as an Inari shrine by Fujiwara no Hidesato in the Heian period (794-1185) after he was instructed to do so by a white fox who appeared in a dream to him. The shrine is dedicated to Uganomitama no Mikoto; Ninigi no Mikoto; and Amenouzume no Mikoto, the goddess of performing arts. The shrine is said to answer prayers for those seeking victory, aid in the improvement of artistic abilities, grant prosperity in business, and promote peace and wellbeing in the home.

This is a small shrine near Shimbashi Station. Its funny to see a shrine nesting among tons of izakayas and bars. If youre in the area check it out.

    Tokyo Bunkyou-ku Yushima 3-30-1
This is a Shinto shrine located in Yushima in Bunkyo City and is representative of an Edo-Tokyo Tenmangu Shrine. It is said that this shrine was built in 458 A.D. by imperial command of Emperor Yuraku in order to enshrine Ameno-tajikaraono-mikoto as a deity. Later in the Nanboku-cho period, Sugawara Michizane was also enshrined. As the Shinto god of scholarship, many students preparing for exams pay homage at the shrine. The precincts are so elegant, and they were the subject of works by the ukiyo-e artist, Utagawa Hiroshige. From early February at the Japanese plum blossom festival (“Ume Matsuri”), the Japanese plums are magnificent in full bloom on the grounds and the festival is busy with sightseers.

    Tokyo Shinjuku-ku Kagurazaka 5-36
Bishamonten is a Nichiren school of Buddhism temple which Tokugawa Ieyasu built in 1595 in an act of founding a place of spiritual protection for the state. In 1793, it was relocated to its current location, Kagurazaka. The principal image of worship at the temple is Bishamonten (Japanese name for Vaiśravaṇa, a Buddhist deity) which has been designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by Shinjuku City. The faithful have since ancient times called it “Bishamon-sama of Kagurazaka”. The Gokaicho (honoring and unveiling of Buddhist image) of the Bishamonten statues is held each year in January, May and September on the day of the Tiger. During the New Year, it is one of the temples of “the tour of the Seven Deities of Good Fortune in Yamanote”, which is when worshippers visit seven temples to pray for happiness.

3-15-20 Miscellaneous Shogo Gorge Toshima-ku, Tokyo
A shrine which worships Kishimojin, the goddess of easy childbirth and child rearing. The name of the shrine’s famed osen dango (sweet dumplings) is a play on words—Kishimojin had one thousand (sen) children (ko – changed to “go” in dango), and thus these little treats also serve as a prayer to be blessed with children. The gingko trees on the shrine grounds are said to be some 700 years old and have been designated Natural Monuments by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The Oeshiki Taisai festival commemorating the Buddhist priest Nichiren’s death is held at the shrine each year from October 16 to 18. During the festival, the approach to the shrine is lined with bustling street stalls.

Kishimojin (Hariti) was originally a Persian (Iran) child eating demon, who converted to Buddhism and wowed to protect the faithful and especially children. This deity is hence very popular among...

According to legend, long ago when the Tsukiji area was all ocean, efforts were being made to reclaim the land, but it was extremely difficult. Then, a sacred object shining with light was spotted floating on the ocean, and it was known that it was inhabited by the spirit of Inari Okami, the fox god. This Shinto shrine was built to house that sacred object, and after it was completed the construction work proceeded apace and the land was reclaimed from the sea. Today, it is said the shrine still provides protection from disasters and dangerous waves. The current main shrine building was the last to be constructed in eastern Japan in the pre-war period.

just steps away from the fish market is an island of peace. A nice little shrine. Local feel and is very quiet despite being so close to the market.

It is said that when the great priest Jigen Daishi Tenkai founded Toeizan Kan-eiji Temple at the demon's gate of Edo Castle, he built this Kannon Hall in the image of Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto, in analogy with the relationship between Heian-kyo and Hieizan. The main deity is the thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, which was transferred from Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, and since the Kannon of child-rearing is enshrined as a side deity, the temple is also known as the Kannon of childbirth, safe delivery, and child-rearing.

I stumbled upon this temple when I entered Ueno Park, and was impressed by its lovely elegance. An especially nice view from below, with an unusually shaped tree framing it.

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
