The Engishiki Jinmyocho, a list of shrines compiled in the Heian period, includes the name of the Tamasaki Shrine. It has long been the primary shrine of the Kazusa region, and has kept the ancient rites all that time. The main building is rare in that it is built in the black-lacquered Gongen-zukuri style, and is quite beautiful. Other sights are t a monument with a haiku from Basho, and the stands of yew plum pines. The Kazusa Kagura sacred music is present seven times a year, and is designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Chiba Prefecture.

Enpuku-ji Temple of the Shingon sect is the 27th temple in the Bando Sanjusankasho, a pilgrimage circuit of 33 Buddhist temples, drawing many worshippers. This ancient temple with a long history began, according to tradition, when a fisherman casting his net caught the statue of the Eleven Faced Kannon and enshrined it in 728. The temple was then properly founded by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) in the Konin period. In the temple grounds is a bright vermillion five-storied pagoda, a five meter statue of Amitabha (Great Buddha), and Japan’s largest embroidery of the reclining Buddha. Festivals are held on the 18th of each month which attract many visitors.

This vivid vermillion ancient temple stands overhanging the side of a small hill in Naruto, Sanmu City. Although, according to the temple historical records, it is said that the temple was established to ward off sea accidents by the High Priest Gyoki, known as the priest who established the large Buddha at Todai-ji Temple in the Nara period when he wandered the country on pilgrimage, the actual date of construction is unknown. It is said that the temple was once surrounded by sea, and legend has it that a fishing boat drifting in the sea in the Edo period was guided by the night light of the temple, saving it from disaster.

First of all, Trip Advisor has the name wrong. It is浪切不動尊, or Nami-kiri Fudo-son. Its name comes from the legend that when it was first built, it was on a rocky seacoast (and the rocks are still...
