  • Tsuchiya Shrine Sacred Cedar

    A giant tree withing Tsuchiya Shrine near the border of Tsurugashima City. The tree is over 1000 years old and supports a circumference of 8.5 meters at height of eye around the trunk. In 1948 it was declared a Designated Natural Monument of Saitama Prefecture. Tsuchiya Shrine was established over and enshrines an ancient scallop shell shaped kofun tomb that dates back to the early 7th century and is believed to have been for a local ruler. The main burial chamber of the tomb is below the main hall of the temple.
