    Located within Joshinetsu-kogen National Park, this artificial lake was created during construction of Nozori Dam in Nakanojo Town, Agatsuma County, Gunma Prefecture. There is a nice walking path around the 10-kilometer circumference, chosen as one of “Japan’s Top 100 Paths.” The coast is a green field, filled with alpine plants. You can see hundreds of varieties of plants from summer to fall, including Nozori hemerocallis and renge azalea. The leaves of fall go perfectly with the clear lake surface.

    This free public bathhouse in Kusatsu, Kusatsu Town is located next to the venerable Osakaya Kusatsu Hot Spring Inn. The bath house is managed by the local residents and along with separate bathing rooms for men and women it is set up to allow guests to experience the traditional Kusatsu bathing practice of “Jikan-yu” or timed bathing.

    Lake Okushima behind Shima Hot Springs was formed during the construction of a dam on the Shimakawa River. This man-made lake is four kilometers around in size and is also a popular spot for viewing the changing colors of the leaves in autumn. On the shore of the lake is a day bathing facility “Shima Koshiki no Yu” hot spring connected to the Shima Seseragi Archive Museum, and on the other side is Inatsutsumi Seseragi Park, where visitors can relax.

    This museum exhibits the artifacts found during excavations in the former Kamahara Village, which was buried by the eruption of Mt. Asama in 1783. You can also see a projection mapping demonstrating the transition of the eruption and a model of a restored face of a body found on the stone steps of the Kannon-do Hall. Related videos are always shown in the audiovisual room. On the second floor, there is an introduction of the history concerning cabbage, a specialty of Tsumagoi Village, etc. You can enjoy great views of Mt. Asama and Mt. Shirane from the observation room.

    This footbath, located next to the Kusatsu-Onsen Bus Terminal, consists of a modern-styled wood gazebo enclosing a stone bath basin. Open 24 hours a day and available for all to use, its perfect for soaking tired feet just after getting off a bus or while waiting for your bus to arrive. The bath’s clear waters are constantly replenished from a hot spring source and will warm your entire body from your feet. The bath is compact, so visitors are encouraged to be forgiving of each other and make space so everyone can enjoy it. Be aware that no towels are provided, so be sure to bring your own for drying your feet afterward.

    This dam, located in Nakanojo Town, Agatsuma County, is a concrete dam constructed on the Shima River, part of the Tone River water system. It was designated as a dam open to the community by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The masonry style design similar to western-style castle walls is popular. Many tourists visit the parks and walking course created and maintained in the surrounding area. The passage where the amount of leakage from the dam can be inspected is maintained for visitors, and with reservations it is also possible to inspect the dam management offices.

The spring is also effective for chronic constipation, diabetes, and cholelithiasis.

    足湯ができ、飲泉も可能と書いてあるので覗いてみましたが、調整中の貼り紙がありお湯はありませんでした。残念!!!

    This is an artificial lake created by the Nakanojo Dam, located about 40 minutes from the Ikaho Interchange. It is characterized by the beautiful cobalt blue color of the water and is called “Shima Blue”. The water is quite acidic and there are no fish in the lake, but many people visit the area to view the reflection on the water of the various colors of the seasons. The color of the lake changes many times a day according to the time and light. Canoe tours are available for visitors to see the “Shima Blue” up close until the middle of November.

    This roadside station is located along National Route 292, near the entrance of Joshin’etsu Kogen National Park. In addition to the hot spring foot bath, there is also a day-trip hot spring and accommodation facility here, so visitors can stay the night, instead of simply resting at the station. The crafts found in the Kuni Tourist Souvenir Center, such as the specialty canned scarlet runner beans, as well as the sedge wrapped in colorful cloth and knitted to make Konkonzouri. The Kuni no Go Shirasuna restaurant’s local specialty Maitake Mushroom Rice Bowl is especially popular. As is the unique soft cream, which is made with the specialty scarlet runner beans.

    A 320-kilometer road that runs between Ueda City in Nagano Prefecture and Nikko City in Tochigi Prefecture via Gunma Prefecture's Kusatsu-machi and Numata City. Winding through the region thought to have Japan's most German-esque scenery, it's the local take on Germany's Romantic Road that runs from Bavaria to the Austrian border. Divided into the Nagano, Gunma, and Tochigi areas it passes through three national parks, a highland region, an area with beautiful volcanic landforms, modern castle towns, and hot springs enclaves. Many Japanese poets have written about the areas along the road, making it one of Japan's most romantic drives, accenting the natural scenery.

    The hot springs from the Nagazasasawa River in Nakanojo Town, Agatsuma County, Gunma Prefecture were formed into this giant bath by damming the river on both sides. The nearby mountains and trees provide a freeing natural atmosphere. The name of the spring derives from the story of people’s hemorrhoids being healed when they burned their butts on the warmed stones at the bottom. Bathing in a bathing suit is acceptable but changing rooms are not available.

    A famously active volcano 2,568 meters tall straddling the border between Nagano Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture. The mountain is believed to have been active for several hundred thousand years and continues to make noise today. Asama Plateau Rhododendron Park is located at the foot of the mountain, and here from May through June, some 150 thousand large flowering rhododendrons delight visitors with the beauty of their blossoms. The park is also beautiful year-round and offers seasonal scenery such as Japanese azaleas and fireweed as well as Japanese larch foliage in the fall.

    This tourist spot to shout out is on the northern route of the Tsumagoi Panorama Line. It began with an event where husbands shouted out their love for their wives in the middle of a cabbage field, known as the “kyabechu” (the cabbage kiss), and the hill has made Tsumagoi Village famous as a sacred place for loving husbands. Before shouting out your love there is a bell to ring, as well as a shouting platform that has been reported on by international media, and a hugging platform. After shouting “I love you”, which husbands find difficult to say on a daily basis, couples time slip back to their newly-wed days, rekindling their love. The hill overlooking the magnificent Mt. Asama is a tourist spot for drives and closed during the winter season.

    This public bathhouse, a 25-minute drive on the Agatsuma Sightseeing Bus bound for Sawatari and leaving from Nakanojo Station on the JR Agatsuma Line, is the only one in Sawatari Onsen. The waters of the bathhouse' calcium sodium chloride spring are said to treat rheumatism, hemorrhoids, skin diseases, and women's diseases. Visitors staying in Sawatari Onsen can use the bathhouse for free but must remember to bring a bathing permit from their inn or hotel. The waters of Sawatari Onsen are said to grant one beautiful, gem-like skin with just a single bath, and locals also frequently make use of this bathhouse. The bathhouse only has a men's and women's indoor bathing area with extra hot and hot baths, so you can choose which type suits you best.
