  • Kusatsu Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Gunma Agatsuma-gun Kusatsumachi Kusatsu
A hot spring area counted as one of Japan’s three most famous. With over 100 source springs, the area generates some 32 thousand liters of natural hot spring water every minute, the greatest production volume in Japan. Since ancient times, the area has flourished as a therapeutic spa, and unique, long-standing traditions remain deeply rooted here, such as the custom of “yumomi,” the cooling of extremely hot spring waters by agitating them with thick wooden planks; and “jikan-yu” timed bathing, a practice distinct to Kusatsu which emerged in the late Edo period. The area’s primarily acidic springs are known for their powerful antibacterial properties, and it is even said they will “treat any disease other than love sickness.” The area is dotted with art museums and is also known as an art town.

This is the sister hotel of the Manza Kogen Hotel and is located at an altitude of around 1,800 meters. It is located approximately 80 minutes from the Joshin-etsu Expressway Usui-Karuizawa Interchange. Visitors can enjoy the three hot springs, including the Komakusa no Yu, with its view of the mountains and the star-filled sky, and the Shakunage no Yu, which is a roofed outdoor bath reserved for women only. The spring water is a characteristic cloudy color with its high sulfur content. It is an acidic, sulfuric magnesium sodium sulfur chloride spring. It is said to have a skin cleansing effect and to be effective for nerve pain, sensitivity to cold, recovery from fatigue, etc. All of the guest rooms have free Wi-fi and it is also possible for non-guests of the hotel to use the baths.

This was a very large hotel with many sections; easy to get lost in. Overall very comfortable. The staff were very kind and allowed an early check in nearly 11am when normally the check in was 3pm...

This beautiful scenery was created from the lava that flowed out and spread when Mt. Asama had its giant eruption in 1783. The sight of the giant lava boulders scattered around makes for an impressive sight. In spring the lovely alpine plants bloom in profusion, while visitors can enjoy the changing leaves in the fall. The contrast with the deep black earth is indeed a sight to behold.

どこを見ても溶岩に囲われていて、自然の凄さや強さを感じることができる場所でした。 景色も良く30分ほど歩きました。 一度は訪れるべき、おすすめの場所です。 I drove there at late February. There is nice view and I felt the power of nature. I walked for about 30 minutes there...

Sainokawara Open-Air Bath is one of Japan’s largest open-air baths nestled within wide open natural splendor. Here you can enjoy all the changes of the seasons from the fresh verdure in early summer, to the changing color of the leaves in autumn, and the snowy landscapes in the winter. And in the evenings, gaze at the night sky full of stars. The source of the hot spring is an ever hot well, almost as hot as magma, from within Kusastu Onsen. Because the water temperature is as high as about 95 degrees the spring water has an anti-inflammatory and sterilizing effect. It is also beneficial for burns and those suffering from nerve pains. There are separate changing rooms for both men and women but no washing facilities.

This very large outdoor pool in the park is said to be able to accommodate 100 people. I was the only one using it! We stayed in Kusatsu for 3 nights and chose to visit here on the rainy day of our...

Netsu no Yu in Kusatsu Hot Spring is a sightseeing facility where you can experience “yumomi,” a type of performance that has been passed down since the Edo period. Besides experiencing yumomi by following the lead of the female performers, there are many other daily events you can enjoy, such as the “yumomi dance show.” Particularly popular is the “yumomi-kun show,” which is performed by the “Thespakusatsu Challengers,” a sub-group of the “Thespakusatsu,” a local pro soccer team.

Came here with our tour group and at first i was wondering why we had to see this but i quickly changed my mind. This show was impressive. The effort that these ladies put into their show is awesome...
