This museum, which opened in 1995, exhibits and preserves festival floats, a prefecturally designated tangible cultural asset. Three floats are always on display and are regularly rotated. The museum recreates the semi-annual Tochigi Autumn Festival by combining the real floats that are on display with digital audio and video, allowing visitors to experience the intensity of the festival and the beauty of its festival floats.

More than half of Tochigis traditional festival floats are on display here, which enables visitors to see them even though the festival is only held in November of even-numbered years. The overview...

    Tochigi Tochigi-shi Irifunecho 2-16
This local culture hall contains exhibits concerning the Yokoyama family, a wealthy Meiji period merchant family. The right half of the facility was once used as a hemp wholesale store, while the left half was used as a bank, and inside visitors can see things such as a reception area restored to look as it did when it was in use. Kura storehouses built of Fukaiwa stone from Kanuma stand on either side of the facility's stone main building, which has a 7.2-meter-wide frontage and which is nine meters deep. The facility's establishment areas, residence area, storehouses, and Western-style building have been designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. In 2018, a tourism information area, multilingual video, and multilingual informational panels were added to the facility, with visitors noting this increases ease of use and understanding for international tourists.

    Tochigi Tochigi-shi Yamatocho 4-18
This museum consists of a kura storehouse and residence which belonged to the Sakakura, a family which operated a pawn broker business in the Edo period. Inside this 200-year-old compound, the museum displays historical items from the city, pieces by artists connected to the area, and stone tools excavated within city limits. Visitors can view the distinctive features of the main building, including its unusually-designed tatami mat room which connects to the storehouse; removable shoji paper doors with vertical wooden bars; and 15-centimeter-wide, 40-centimeter-high right-angled doorframe. The compound is a rare, historically valuable example of period architecture, including the storehouse' entry, which has a rat guard, and steep steps with anti-slip measures.

Tochigi Areas

around-area-map

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
