This outlet mall in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture is a popular destination with foreign tourists and visitors from the Tohoku region. It features about 170 stores selling a range of products like fashion and household goods, interior decor, sports merchandise, kids items, and more. There are restaurants and cafés as well. Its fashionable shopping streets, reminiscent of America’s east coast, make it a popular dating spot.

It’s a great place to visit for some “western” style shopping and an excellent little stop in sleepy Sano. Take in the culture of the “town” and get some quality shopping in as well, away from the...

These are the ruins of Ashikaga School—said to be the oldest school in Japan—which was abandoned in 1872. The original building has been reconstructed and designated as a Japan Heritage. It is open to the public, so you can see where students studied back during the earliest days of education in Japan.

Being the oldest university of Japan this is a true marvel of Japanese culture and heritage. Beautiful and tranquil.

A full spectrum of flowers bloom in this flower park, located in Tochigi Prefecture. One particularly famous specimen is the wisteria said to be over 140 years old, and designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument. Many visitors come from all over the country during peak season when Japan’s largest wisteria and white Japanese wisteria bloom and form a tunnel. In winter, you’ll find one of the largest illumination displays in Kanto, with four million light bulbs.

This historic district is located along the Uzuma River in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture. It features preserved townscape lined with warehouses and other old buildings from when it was a bustling wholesale district from the late Edo period to the early Showa period. Today it is a popular tourist destination that allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of the Edo period. It is also used as a filming location for TV and film productions. There is even a pleasure boat that operates on the Uzuma River.

The old town does not carry the atmosphere at all as there are many other nicer old towns in japan. There are only a mere few old houses ie along the main road there are 5 and along the canal just a...

The winery got its start in 1958 when a middle school teacher and his students started a grape farm in the forest. Currently, it brews high-quality wine that has even been used at dinners for major summits. You can buy some wine at the shop, or try lunch with wine while looking out over the vineyard.

Lovely range of wines and reasonable prices and other products such as local cheeses and hams. I only stopped there for an hour or so to pick a few bottles of Japanese wine as I was passing through...

Tochigi Areas

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi's capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
