  • Katono Orchards
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Tochigi Yaita-shi Nagai 1184
The Nagai district at the foot of the Takahara-yama Mountain range is one of the leading apple producing areas in the Kanto region. A family has been running this four-hectare apple orchard in its beautiful rural location for three generations. Their safe, reliably good apples are grown with organic fertilizers and limited use of pesticides. Normally, the leaves around the fruit are removed to improve its color, but on this orchard, they are allowed to grow. The nutrients produced by the leaves are converted to sugar and stored in the fruit, so apples with the leaves left on are known for being particularly sweet. They check the whole orchard daily and only offer fruit picked ripe from the tree.

Tochigi Areas

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
