A forest park which serves as a habitat for many plants and animals, including rare species. Nature walks and activity programs are conducted in the Forest Recreation Zone. Access to portions of the Forest Learning Zone is restricted in order to preserve natural environments, and only guided walks are allowed in these areas.

This limestone cavern is located along National Route 400 in Shiobara, Nasushiobara City. It is said that Minamoto no Aritsune, who fought in the Battle of Dannoura alongside Minamoto No Yoshitsune, secretly lived here after escaping to Shiobara to evade Minamoto no Yoritomo’s army. There are exhibits on the formation of limestone caverns and Minamoto no Aritsune, and there’s also an arms museum that features 150 pieces of gear from the Azuchi-Momoyama until the present day.

This stone is on the northern side of Nasu Onsen-jinja Shrine in Yumoto, Nasu Town. Legends say that the hydrogen sulfide and other poisonous gases being expelled in the area represent the lingering grudge of a nine-tailed fox that morphed into a beautiful woman and kidnapped the emperor. Matsuo Basho visited the area as well and left behind a poem, and this place has been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty as one of the locations featured in Basho’s “Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North).” There is walkway around the area, but because gases are still being emitted in the vicinity, crossing the fence and approaching the site is not allowed.
  • Mt. Chausu

The highest peak in the Nasu Mountain Range. The mountain is in fact an active volcano and white smoke continues to spew from its back. A gondola can be ridden up to the ninth station of the mountain; from there, it's a 40 to 50 minute walk to reach the top. The view from the mountaintop is truly stunning. Depending on the weather, you might even be able to see a sea of clouds covering everything below. The mountain is also a popular destination to enjoy fall foliage in autumn.

This marshland is situated 1,230 meters above sea level along the upper reaches of the Naka River, a river which flows through Nasushiobara City, in Tochigi Prefecture. There are walking paths for visitors to use, and from May through August, you can see subalpine plants such as eastern skunk cabbages, Nikko day lilies, and Gentiana triflora Pall. There's parking nearby which can also be used by large busses. Many tourists come here to enjoy the area's seasonal scenery.

    Tochigi Yaita-shi Shimoisano
This plateau, which is a part of Nikko National Park, is located about a 15-minute drive from Yaita Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. It is famous for its Japanese azalea. Starting in mid-June the entire area is dyed vermilion by about 200,000 of these flowers. From the observation deck, visitors can see Nikko City, the Nasu Mountain Range, and as far as the Kanto Plain. A promenade has been built in the area, making it popular with trekkers and hikers. Visitors can enjoy observing the starry night sky in the summer and viewing the fall foliage in the autumn. During the azalea season shuttle buses that operates between the plateau and JR Yaita Station are available.
  • Ryushun Falls
    Travel / Tourism
Northern Shiobara-shi, Tochigi prefecture Oomao National Forest
A 15 minute drive from the Nishinasuno-shiobara Interchange. The waterfall can be reached via a 10 minute walk from the Ryushun parking area on the left side of the road past the Saruiwa Tunnel on National Route 400. Just past the Ryushun no Tsuribashi suspension bridge, the falls are 15 meters tall. The falls’ name means “spring flowing,” said to be an allusion to the fact that the falls dry up for three months in winter and don’t start flowing again until spring. Although not a particularly strong waterfall, the sight of the waters quietly flowing over the bare rock wall is elegant and soothing. The area around where the Ryushun no Tsuribashi suspension bridge crosses Senryu Gorge is also quite beautiful and popular destination to walk.
  • Otome-no-taki (“Maiden Falls”)
    Travel / Tourism
    Tochigi Pref. Nasushiobarashi Itamuro 703
This 10-meter high, five-meter wide waterfall comes from the Sawana River of Mt. Shirosasayama, splitting into two beautiful streams and a pure white mist. There are many theories as to the name’s origin, including that the water looks like a young maiden, and a theory that a mermaid was once seen in the falls. Enjoy the clear air and pure falls hugged by mossy rocks and thick forest, or admire the unique icicle appearance in winter.

Tochigi Areas

around-area-map

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
