  • Rinnoji Taiyuin Temple: Niomon Gate

    "This Niomon gate is located at the entrance of Taiyuin Temple, the mausoleum of Iemitsu, the third Tokugawa Shogun. The temple's main gate with an impressive 315 lanterns, it houses two Nio (Buddhist guardian kings): an ""agyo"" image with its mouth open and ""Ungyo"" image with its mouth closed. Glaring from the left and right of the vermilion toned structure, their bright colors contrast with the subdued tones of the gate. It is said that this is where the term ""A-Un Breathing"" comes from, which describes two people functioning together so well it's as if they were joined by their breath."

  • Nikko Toshogu Shrine: Shinyosha Hall

    A structure housing portable shrines at Nikko Toshogu Shrine, dedicated to the first Tokugawa Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. It also honors Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Minamoto no Yoritomo. Three portable shrines used in the May and October Shun-Juu Togyosai Festivals are housed in the hip and gable roofed building located to the south of the worship hall. They symbolically carry the spirits of the historic figures honored at the main shrine. The October procession sees the three portable shrines carried as far as the Shinkyo Bridge area. The roughly seven-square-meter building has a large number of bird sculptures, including cranes, phoenixes, parakeets, horned owls, and others. The front of the building is engraved with a tiger, which was Ieyasu's zodiac sign.

    This copper torii shrine gate at Futarasan-jinja Shrine was erected in 1769. It has a large name tablet. Walking down Toshogu Shrine's Kamishindo approach, you reach it after passing through Futarasan-jinja Shrine's two-story gate. The copper gate you see today replaced the original one in 1799. It features lotus flower engravings at the base of the gate's pillars. It has a Mitsudomoe crest and was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1944.

    The temple is located in Yunishigawa, Nikko City, on top of a hill in Yunishigawa Onsen, one of the legendary places of the fallen Heike warriors throughout Japan, and is known as the family temple of the fallen Heike warriors who were defeated at the Battle of Dannoura and retreated to a remote area. The Yunishigawa Onsen still retains its own custom of not putting up carp streamers on Dragon Boat Festival to avoid detection by the Genji clan.

    宇都宮城から鬼門にあたる北東方向に、1516年に藩主・宇都宮成綱が開基した浄土宗のお寺です。 赤門と呼ばれる大きく立派な仁王門から境内に入ると、石段の途中にある桜は宇都宮市内で一番早く咲く桜として有名だそうですが、12月にも拘らず紅葉がきれいでした。 立派な仁王門などに比べると、本堂は意外なほど質素な感じでした。

    栃木界隈へのドライブ旅行の際、栃木市にある天台宗寺院「高勝寺」へも行ってみました。 山の中にあるので、登る必要がありますが、自然たっぷりでパワーを感じました。 「三重塔」が特に綺麗でした。

    796年創建、坂上田村麻呂が開基の天台宗のお寺でです。 盧舎那仏座像は市指定文化財となっており 境内に入ると 正面に鎮座し まず目にとまります。 宇都宮大仏とも言われているそうです。

    宇都宮駅前のホテルに宿泊した朝に、二荒山神社まで散歩する途中に通りました。同宿者に寳藏寺だったので、気になって覗いてみましたが、朝早くで入れませんでしたが、駅前通りに面した山門はなかなかのもので機会があれば、開いている時間に寄ってみたいなと思いました。

    平将門伝説が残る寺です。広い敷地があるようで、山門から勅使門を抜け本堂へ、護摩堂 (五大尊堂)、閻魔堂を回って本堂の裏から墓地へ回ってみましたが、一山境内かと思うほどでした。帰りは墓地からそのまま本堂へ戻りました。

    足利公園から、このお寺の枝垂れが見えたので訪問してみました。石段の横に大きな紅枝垂れが満開。階段の上からでも、下からでも楽しめます。梅や紫木蓮も同時に見頃を迎えており華やかでした。いい時期に訪れることができました。

    宇都宮駅近くに宿泊した時に朝の散歩で立ち寄りました。宇都宮氏ゆかりのお寺であり、境内には宇都宮八代城主であった宇都宮貞綱公の墓碑もあります。山門や庭もなかなか立派でした。お寺が多いエリアからは少し離れていますが、足を伸ばしてもいい場所だと思います。

    匠町あたりのお散歩の途中で立ち寄りました。ツツジやシャクナゲ、春なのに赤いもみじなど、美しい境内の中に、石の菅笠をかぶったお地蔵様がいらっしゃいました。

    お寺の白い内壁の隅に大きな枝垂れ桜があります。 壁の外側から見ると、長い白壁に両手を伸ばすように枝が広がっていて、なかなか見事。桜越しの鐘楼といった構図もよいですね。 ただ、本堂が工事中でした。

    しだれ桜がきれいということで訪れました。 境内や裏のあんのんホールのしだれがほぼ満開でした。 お寺の桜は落ち着きますね。 あんのんホールは寺が経営する貸しホールです。 珍しいでしね。
