"A large park with spacious grounds spanning 25 hectares. The park encloses several historic structures, including the Nakayama Residence, a large farmhouse built in the mid-Edo period; and the Tobita Residence, the oldest ""magariya""-style building in the prefecture. The park is also a renowned destination for flower viewing, and some 1,500 flowering peach trees spanning five varieties grow on the grounds, in addition to a lotus pond in which grow Oga lotuses, an ancient lotus variety. The Koga Peach Festival is held at the park each year when the trees are in bloom, attracting many visitors who come to enjoy the beauty of the flowers."

    Ibaraki Pref. Bandoushi Sakasai 1262
A park designated a Prefectural Historic Site encompassing the site of Sakasai Castle, a plains castle constructed in the late Warring States period. Built in 1577 by the Later Hojo clan to serve as a base for their expansion into northern Kanto, the castle was destroyed by the mighty samurai lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590 and abandoned. Today, the outer moat and portions of the castle base still remain in an untouched state. Castle facilities such as the main gate, bridge, walls, main building, and two-tier tower have been reconstructed in based on archeological excavations, showing what the castle looked like in its heyday and giving visitors the chance to feel like they've gone back in time. Some 200 cherry trees grow on the grounds, including Beni Sashima cherries, an endemic Ibaraki variety, and the park is a top local destination for viewing cherry blossoms in the spring.

Just a stone’s throw from Tokyo, Ibaraki is a coastal prefecture that has mastered juxtapositions, where old shrines meet new scientific discoveries and traditional gardens are frequented by the inventors of some of the newest technology. Head to Mito City's Kairakuen - one of Japan's Three Great Gardens - in spring to experience the cellestial blooming of fantastic cherry blossoms at the annual sakura festival.
