One of Japan’s Top Three Waterfalls, the Fukuroda Falls in Kuji County, Ibaraki Prefecture, are 73 meters wide with a 120-meter drop over the tributaries and rapids of Kuji River. Also called “Shido-no-taki” because the falls break over four levels of rocks or because Saigyo Hoshi suggested visiting in each of the four seasons. Its icy visage in winter and the leaves of fall make for particularly inspiring views. The old lookout deck and the new one built in 2008 offer you different views to enjoy.

This zoo is located inside the Hitachi Kamine Park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Popular for its elephants, giraffes, capybara beavers, and lesser pandas, this zoo nurtures around 500 creatures of 70 varieties. The Petting Square, where one can touch the smaller animals and the python and observe the animals up-close is one of the main attractions. The Elephant Cafe is also popular where one can watch the elephants while enjoying a snack.

It’s an old zoo with tiny concrete cages. The money habitat is okay, but the rest is rather sad. I would skip it.

This prefectural art museum sits on the Izura Coast—a scenic location in Ibaraki City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The interior presents materials and personal effects of Tenshin Okakura, the artist who moved the first section (painting section) of the original Nihon Bijutsu-in to Izura for work. There are special exhibits featuring modern Japanese paintings as well. You must see the Pacific Ocean from the observation lobby. Cafe and museum shop adjacent.

I had such a good time! Everything is completely rebuilt, and the art exhibits and the view from the hexagon house were fantastic. I highly recommend this museum!

A charming day trip hot spring bathhouse commanding views of scenic Mt. Gozen and the Naka River. Situated along National Route 123 an hour and 20-minute bus ride from JR Mito Station, there are also many sightseeing destinations in the area such as hiking courses and the Twin Ring Motegi motorsport race track. The bathhouse's natural sulfur containing sodium chloride spring contains an abundance of iron. Patrons can relax in eight different varieties of baths, including a large indoor bath, outdoor bath, and source spring bath. The bathhouse also offers soft serve ice cream, wine, and juices made with yuzu fruit grown near Mt. Tsukuba, a local specialty product. In the bathhouse' restaurant, visitors can enjoy local, Mt. Tsukuba dishes made with regional specialty products.

A nature park adjoining Juo Dam an eight-minute drive from the Hitachi-kita Interchange on the Joban Expressway. Some 400 cherry trees spanning 35 varieties have been planted in the park and in spring when the trees are in full bloom visitors can enjoy the landscape dyed pink by their blossoms.
