The Iwaki Coal & Fossil Museum is dedicated to fossils and to the history of the coal-mining industry. There are displays of many precious fossils from all over the world, with the centerpiece being the Futabasaurus suzukii plesiosaur skeleton that was discovered in the Futaba Town of Iwaki City. The coal exhibition area has displays on the history of coal’s use as a fuel, focusing on the coal that used to be mined in the Iwaki region, and on the history of coal-mining. This part of the Museum includes a very authentic reproduction of part of a coal mine, which was used as a filming location for the movie “Hula Girls.”

Some English explanations exist, so that foreigner can also enjoy. If you are sort of freak on something scientific this is the place you should visit. Scientifically coal and fossil are almost the...

Fukushima Pref. Iwakishi Uchigoushiramizumachi Hirohata 219
Shiramizu Amidado Temple was constructed in 1160, in the latter years of the Heian period, by Princess Tokuhime, the daughter of Fujiwara no Kiyohira. It is the only building in Fukushima Prefecture to have designated as a National Treasure. The way the Temple garden is designed, with ponds on the eastern, western and southern sides, is characteristic of the late Heian period Jodo (Pure Land) style of garden design. To reach the Amidado hall, visitors cross over a red bridge positioned directly in front of the hall. The architectural design of the Shiramizu Amidado Temple is said to have been influenced by temple architecture in Hiraizumi, the region where Princess Tokuhime was born.

We have travelled Japan extensively and one of the most beautiful is a term I seldom use. It is also hard to express what makes this temple so worthwhile as the building is nothing out of the...

Fukushima Pref. Iwakishi Nakosomachisekita Nagasawa 6-1
A famous historical location in Iwaki City. One of many ancient checkpoints which once existed in Japan, this particular checkpoint was renowned as an image in Heian period waka poetry. The area around the checkpoint has been designated Nakoso Prefectural Nature Park, and, together with the Shirakawa Barrier in Shirakawa City and Nezugaseki in Yamagata Prefecture, it is considered one of the three great checkpoints of Ohshu Province. Near the checkpoint stand monuments inscribed with waka poetry by Ono no Komachi, Minamoto no Yoshiie, and Izumi Shikibu, and a haiku by Matsuo Basho.

  • Natsuigawa Gorge
    Travel / Tourism
    Fukushima Iwaki-shi
This gorge is located about a 35-minute drive from Iwaki Station. It runs about 16 kilometers from Kawamae Station to Ogawago Station on the Ban’etsu East Line. It is most notable for its unusual rock formations and cliffs, which were formed by the erosion of granite as the Natsui River carved through the Abukuma Mountains. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery created by the clear streams and unusual rock formations all year long. However, one of its biggest attractions is the fall foliage that comes in from late October to mid- November. The area was also designated as Natsuigawa Gorge Prefectural Nature Park in 1953. We recommend viewing the sights by car as the area does not have a promenade for pedestrians.
