Fukushima Pref. Aiduwakamatsushi Outemachi 1-1 In Tsurugajo Park
This is a Japanese castle in Otemachi, Aizuwakamatsu City. Locally it is called Tsurugajo Castle. The castle was the seat of famous feudal warlords but was damaged in the Boshin Civil War at the end of the Edo period and demolished in 1874. It was rebuilt in 1965, and in 2011 the roof tiles were reverted to the original red resembling the time of the end of Tokugawa Shogunate. It is the only castle in Japan where visitors can see the elegant red tiled keep. In addition, the castle tower also acts as a museum focusing on the Boshin War, exhibiting helmets, weapons, materials, etc. of successive castle owners. Around the castle tower is also a cherry blossom viewing area and many visitors come to visit in the spring.

The castle grounds are always open, though the main tower is open just during the day. Go in the early morning for private views of the foilage. It was foggy during my visit, creating a magical...

The Nisshikan is a place of learning built in 1803 for the purpose of raising personnel within the Aizu clan. 10-year old children in the Aizu clan would come here to liberal and martial arts, and Byakkotai was also trained here. The original building burned down, but it has been completely recreated in the residential district of Aizu Wakamatsu using the original plans. The archery and martial arts gyms are open and utilized for a variety of purposes, including orientations, training camps, and on-location tv shoots. It offers experiences with zazen (seated meditation), tea ceremony, and archery for the general public.

Once upon a time there was a Samuray School. Since it was in Aizu, and Aizu samurays got into a conflict with the emperor (or, rather, his representatives) there was a (Bonshin) war. During the war...

The museum possesses and displays valuable materials connected to the Aizu domain and the Byakkotai. The path from the front of the museum up to the approach for Mt. This shrine is said to be the origin of the “Aizu” location name. It began when people worshipped Izanagi-no-mikoto and Izanami-no-mikoto at Mt. Mikaguratake. Now it elicits adoration from worshippers inside and outside the prefecture looking for better fortune, longevity, better relationships, and safe commutes. The precincts feature the “Usuzumi Zakura”: a holy tree that is mostly white with some light charcoal color, which gradually turns reddish and releases a unique aroma. The Ayame Festival held in the outer Ayame Garden begins in mid-June and exhibits 100,000 irises, attracting many visitors.
