"This confectionery shop is marked by its charming carved wood sign. The two-story building along Nanukamachi-dori Street has an adjoined Japanese cafe and mini-car museum. Their ""taroyaki,"" stuffed with sweet bean paste that has large chunks remaining, are obanyaki stuffed pancakes also called ""kintsuba"" in Aizu. It is loved for its mild sweetness, which makes it delicious even when it cools. In addition to standard bean paste, there is a wide variety such as white bean paste, cream, green peas paste and chocolate. Their shaved ice using homemade syrup can be eaten any time of the year."

"A long-established Japanese confectionary store founded in the Edo period (1603-1868), the exact date of establishment is unknown because it was destroyed by fire during the Boshin War (1868-1911). The ""Tsubaki Mochi"" is a traditional Aizu confectionary with a crisp and simple taste, and is said to have been eaten by the Byakkotai (the Japanese warriors who fought in the Byakkotai) in the old days."

"This antique cafe is located along Noguchi Hideyo Seishun Street. Using a renovated earthen storehouse with a history of more than 200 years, it offers a cafe menu with only carefully selected ingredients. Their popular lunch menu uses chewy germinated brown rice, and is only available on Wednesdays. Its deep flavor overturns the conventional stereotype of brown rice as being difficult to eat, and it has a reputation for being able to relax the body and mind. The ""Omachi-dori sweet set"", that comes with roasted green tea or coffee and Tsubaki mochi (rice-cake sweet sandwiched between two camellia leaves) from Iseya, a long-established Japanese confectionery shop in Aizu Wakamatsu that is said to have been eaten by the Byakkotai samurai , is the perfect break from walking around town."

"This ramen shop is located two kilometers to the east of Tsuruga Castle. It offers Aizu ramen using homemade noodles that have a firm and chewy texture. The simple interior is a small but cozy space. Their most popular dish, the ""half-sized sauce pork cutlet rice bowl and soy sauce ramen set,"" is popular because you can taste a variety of Aizu specialties all at once. Their sauce pork cutlet rice bowl of fresh, juicy Japanese pork fillet cutlets served with plenty of homemade sauce is a hearty meal. The ultra-thick one-centimeter-wide noodles and milk ramen noodles are also popular."

This flagship store is located a 10-minute walk from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station and carries all of Taroan's products. Facing the street, it is an elegant combination of a grain storehouse and kominka (old house) in Shimogo Town. Their ""Aizu no Tenjin-sama"" (Gods of Aizu) is a combination of fluffy and sweet bouchee dough and salty Hokkaido butter, and it is a popular product that was created for the opening in 1979. This soba shop is in a town with beautiful scenery all year long. The shop is about a three-minute drive from Yamato Station, and makes their noodles with 50/50 mix of steel ground and stone ground whole grain soba flour. The matching of different ground flour offers a unique texture that makes this shop particularly popular. Their unique broth, made using the hongaeshi method of mixing and maturing soy sauce, mirin, and sugar, and making dashi broth, really brings out the aroma of the noodles. The broth strikes a perfect balance with top grade Rishiri kombu kelp, and thick-shaved two-year-aged bonito.

    Fukushima Kitakata-shi 3-4774
This ramen shop has been in business since 1960, meaning it has a full 60 years of success behind it. This is the main shop of Taian Shokudo, a chain with several outlets throughout the Tohoku region, and they offer old fashioned Kitakata style ramen with medium-thick flat noodles with high alkaline content. The slippery, springy noodles have a fun, crinkly hand-made texture that matches the locally-sources soy sauce broth perfectly. You can order the special house-made soy broth extra rich, as well. The outside is built like an old-fashioned warehouse, which doesn't look at all like the usual ramen shop.

This confectionery has maintained its unchanged flavor since its founding in the early Taisho era. The shop is housed in a ware-house style residence that was once a traditional Japanese restaurant, and now it offers a variety of standard sweets and seasonal treats. Their most popular item is the bite-sized Hitokuchi Manju buns, which are popularly called Ten Yen Buns. The clean, pleasant sweetness are light enough to eat every day. Their seasonal treats are also special, as they have Sakura mochi cherry rice cake in spring, shaved ice in summer, sweet potato treats in fall and in winter, they have Kintsuba sweet bean jelly. Follow Shiyakusho-dori Street past the park and look for the modern exterior.

Their original dish, Kitakata Ramen Burger, uses hard-fried ramen noodles in place of buns to hold a slice of Char Siu pork for a unique bit of luxury. They also offer a limited number of meals with two kinds of Char Siu, one made with Hayamakogen pork, and one from local Aizu-jidori chicken. This ramen shop dates back to the 1920s. Located about a three-minute walk from Kitakata Station, they offer natural, additive free ramen. The bright, glass-lined interior offers a somehow nostalgic, modern atmosphere. Their flat, thick noodles are aged, and their hand-kneaded crinkled shape offers a chewy texture that matches the richly flavored broth perfectly. They also offer a menu of Chinese dishes, including Baniku Mapo Men noodles with spicy, authentic mapo tofu and horse meat, as well as gyoza dumplings, shrimp in chili sauce, and more.
