A garden and art museum a five minute walk from Sakata Station. Built as a garden and villa for the Homma family of wealthy merchants and landowners, the facility was opened to the public as a private art museum in 1947. The museum’s collection consists primarily of works of art passed down for generations in the Homma family, and the museum is filled with ancient writings, antiques, paintings, and other valuable artwork. Other highlights include the Seienkaku, a beautiful wood villa built in the Kyoto style; and the Kakubuen, a traditional garden built around a central pond celebrated as one of the best Japanese gardens in the country and renowned for the beauty of its fall foliage.

さすが江戸時代から戦前まで豪商だった本間家の美術品です。日本国内でも著名な作者のオンパレードですね。撮影不可の作品も有りますが、ほとんどが撮影可なのが嬉しいです。私事ですが「真田太平記(池波正太郎作)」にも出ていた「小野通女」の作品を見られたことが嬉しく感じました。

This museum, founded in 1997, displays on permanent exhibit the western works of Shigeru Morita, Tsunero Kokuryo, and Chozo Saito, and the sculptor Tsuyoshi Takahashi. From inside its spacious 30,000 m2 grounds and the 3,000 m2 structure, one can overlook Sakata City, Mt. Chokai and Mogami River. On site is a temporary exhibit hall and a community gallery made available for the local residents.

気になった展覧会があると訪れています。鳥海山をのぞめる高台にあるため、気持ちがいいです。鑑賞後、喫茶店で景色をながめながら飲むコーヒーもよりおいしく感じます。

Yamagata Pref. Sakatashi Tsuchibuchi Akira Jiro 20-2

This astronomical observatory is in the Chokai-no-mori area of Tsuchibuchi, Sakata City. It has a 50-centimeter reflector telescope, the largest in the Shonai region. They hold astronomical observations at night on Fridays and Saturdays and during the day on Saturdays and Sundays. In the annex's exhibition room there's a model of the space shuttle, a display of the constellations, and a large quick reference board of the stars where you can see what the sky will look like later that night.

Yamagata Sakata-shi Iimoriyama 2-13 Tono

This park is on prefectural route 355 in Iimoriyama 2-Chome, Sakata City. It has an adventure playground, multipurpose ground, a gymnasium, and other facilities. It also has a memorial hall dedicated to Sakata native photographer Ken Domon. There are about 15,000 hydrangeas planted on the grounds, and they bloom from late June through early July in a grand spectacle to see.

This forest park is in Tsuchibuchi, Sakata City. Found in a grand forest with a view of the Shonai Plain and Sea of Japan, it has a variety of facilities including lodging, a campground, multipurpose plaza, astronomical observatory, and forestry education hall. On weekends and holidays, they offer guided forest walking tours, allowing a good glimpse of the plants and animals of the forest. They also run a ski slope in winter.

晴れてると抜群の眺めです。展望台の周囲の木を伐採しており海まで見渡せます。午前中は、人もいなくのびのび過ごせました。

キャンプ初心者ですが，上級者に連れて行ってもらいました。設営後，管理事務所で料金を支払うだけで，ゆるくてイイ感じです。トイレや，夏期のシャワーもあります。隣接宿泊施設の日帰り温泉もありますし，コテージプランや，ワンちゃんエリアもあり，次は自分の家族で行きたいデス

Approximately 13 minutes by car from the Sakata Interchange on the Nihonkai-Tohoku Expressway, this historic park overlooking the Japan Sea, devastatingly beautiful sunset is one of the Top 100 Municipal Parks of Japan. The park is dotted with distinctive historic relics reminiscent of the port’s heyday, such as the 2:1 scale Sengokubune, a historic cargo junk, Japan’s oldest hexagonal wooden lighthouse, and an ancient compass stone. This park also boasts over 400 Yoshino sakura with a sakura festival held every April. Many visitors throng to the festival during which time the Sengokubune and the hexagonal lighthouse are illuminated for the special occasion.

This museum is where you can learn about the history and culture of Sakata City, and it is housed in a building built in 1895 which was a long-established restaurant. On the second floor, you can see the famous Sakata Kasafuku displayed, which is one of Japan's three largest Tsurushi Kazari hanging ornaments, and an almost 106 tatami mat-sized Oriage coffered ceiling in the reception hall. On the first floor, exhibitions vary from room to room in the History Exhibition Area, and there is a store and cafe featuring Japanese-style sweets.

Tateyama Park is located on the site of the former Karikawa Castle, which was the home of Kitadate Daigaku Toshinaga. It is on a low hill ten-minute walk up from JR Karikawa Station. One of its attractions is the panoramic view of the Shonai Plain that it offers, and the more than 200 Somei Yoshino cherry trees that grow there make it a favorite spot for viewing cherry blossoms. A cherry blossom festival is held there every April, and visitors can try the local delicacies such as grilled herring and grilled pork. The park contains an outdoor stage and a grand golf course, as well as a children's playground. This park is an environment that the whole family can enjoy.
Shonai Municipal Naito Shuin Watercolor Museum

Shonai Municipal Naito Shuin Watercolor Museum has and exhibits a collection of over 2000 works of the watercolor artist Naito Shuin, former president of the Japan Watercolor Association and honorary citizen of Shonai Town. The museum is located about a ten-minute walk along Prefectural Route 44 north of JR Amarume Station. The collection is on view four times a year, and visitors can always view these realistic, bold, and impressive paintings with fresh eyes. The museum also exhibits the works of other local artists and holds exhibitions of watercolor paintings solicited from the general public. One of its missions is to publicize the region's art.

About a 40-minute drive from the Sakata Minato Interchange off the Nihonkai Tohoku Expressway via the National Route 7, this park, at 1000-meter elevation, is located about midslope off the Chokaizan Blueline parkway on the mountain route connecting Yuza Town, Yamagata to Nikaho City, Akita. Covering an area of about 200 square meters, deer are let loose to roam this park from early June to mid-October. In early October, the deer horn cutting ceremony is held during the Chokaizan Jinroku Tsunokiri Sai festival. Oodaira-sanso, the overnight accommodations in the park, sells deer rice crackers for feeding the deer.

About 23 minutes from the Sakata Minato Interchange off the Yamagata Expressway via National Route 7, this beach, located in the northern Shonai, is the largest in the prefecture. The expansive beach with its wide white band of sand contrasts beautifully with the straight blue coastline and with coastal pines to one's back, and provides an elegant view of Mt. Chokai. The beach area is equipped with showers and toilets while immediately nearby are campsites, cottages, and day-use hot spring facilities. Because of all of the above aspects of the beautiful environs, the amenities and the safety, this beach was selected as one of the top 100 beaches in Japan by the Ministry of the Environment.

空港の緩衝地が公園として整備されており、テニスコートの施設などもあります。空港を周回するコース(約6キロ)があり、サイクリング、ランニング、散歩を楽しめます。アップダウンは気になる程ではなく、全体の2/3が林間コースになっているので暑い時期でも比較的快適なコースです。公園の管理事務所は空港ビルから少し距離がありますが、ランニング後にシャワーも使用できます。(有料100-200円)

Yamagata Areas

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
