This river port is about five minutes on foot from JR Furukuchi Station. It serves sightseeing boats that ply the Mogami River towards Kawa-no-Eki Mogamikyo Kusanagi. The Mogami River Basho Line Descent lets visitors take in the scenery from the river while listening to the songs of the quirky boatmen. You can get a meal along with the boat ride if you reserve in advance, and passengers who come on their own are welcome. They offer a limited period cruise course, and the boat itself transforms with the seasons with bamboo shades replacing the roof in summer and heated low kotatsu tables installed for winter.

A tofu shop located at the entranceway to the Ginzan Onsen hot spring resort area in Obanazawa City renowned for its old fashioned Taisho Roman-style townscape. The shop’s “Tofuya” sign and menu posted on what otherwise looks like the entrance to an ordinary Japanese-style home draw the eye due to their unexpectedness. The shop’s tofu is served in disposable plastic trays to make it easy to eat on the go while walking about the town. The shop’s particularly popular boiled tofu is so soft and delicate it practically melts in your mouth. The nama-age deep fried bean curd has a crisp and light texture. Diners are recommended to soak their feet in the nearby footbath while enjoying their tofu.

This is a Japanese style cafe in Obanazawa City, just in front of Shiragane Falls at Ginzan Onsen. The burnt-umber colored interior overflows with Taisho-era atmosphere, with counter seating on the 1st floor and floor seating on the 2nd. Sightseers particularly like the Haikarasan Curry Bun. Firm, chewy bread made with Yamagata grown Nebarigoshi wheat, fried crisp with spicy curry inside. These are also popular as souvenirs. They also have Zunda mochi made with fresh green soybeans, Kurumochi with walnuts, and Yamagata home-style stewed taros and other delicacies.

First all, the customer service is extremely bad. To even have a sit in the shop, we have to pay extra 300yen just to sit in an empty shop. They have a bad attitude and bad service. Really...

A sightseeing boat ride which travels down the Mogami River. The Mogami River is famous in part due to a poem by renowned a haiku poet Matsuo Basho, and riders can enjoy the seasonal beauty of the area during their journey. One of the highlights of the trip is being able to visit the Sennin-do Temple mentioned in Basho’s “Narrow Road to the Interior.” The ship embarks from JR Takaya Station.

Yamagata Areas

around-area-map

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
