    Akita Pref. Ogashi Kitauranyudouzaki Kombura
    Cape Nyudozaki is at the end of the Oga Peninsula. At the end of an expanse of green grass stands a lighthouse characterized by its black and white exterior. The panorama of the wide expanse of blue ocean is most impressive. A monument that marks 40° north latitude is made of andesite rock from the Oga Peninsula.

    An aquarium overlooking the Sea of Japan in Togashiohama, Oga City, Akita Prefecture which was remodeled and reopened in 2004. Visited by large numbers of tourists, the aquarium was also used for filming in the movie “Tsuribaka Nisshi.” The impressive Giant Sea of Oga Aquarium exhibit recreates the ocean off Oga and houses some 2,000 living creatures spanning 40 species. Visitors can also come in contact with real sea creatures at the aquarium’s Touch Pool and watch the aquarium’s popular polar bears as they romp and play. The aquarium also has a restaurant where you can eat while gazing out over the sea.

    A museum dedicated to presenting materials relating to Namahage, traditional ogres which are part of the folk customs of Oga, located a 20 minute drive by car from JR Hadachi Station. The museum building is built with “Kanpu-seki” stone from Oga outside and Akita cedar inside, and various rare and precious materials relating to the folklore of Namahage are presented in the museum’s atmospheric confines. Highlights include the museum’s display of 110 Namahage costumes and 40 Namahage masks actually used in areas throughout the city. The rows of diverse costumes and masks standing together is truly an impressive sight. Visitors can also put on a real Namahage costume themselves and take a commemorative photo.

    These Namahage statues are in Honzan Monzen, Funagawa Minato, Oga City. They are each 9.99 meters high, to reflect the 999 steps leading to nearby Akagami-jinja Shrine, said to be the birthplace of the ogre legends. As a powerful local symbol, these are popular spots to take pictures.

    An observation deck standing on top of Mt. Kanpu, well known for its beautiful landscape views. On the first floor is a souvenir shop and restaurant, while on the second and third floors visitors can see photographs of the Hachirogata reclamation and displays on the history and nature of the Oga Peninsula in the exhibition rooms. On the fourth floor is the rotating observation deck. From here visitors can see the full 360 degree panorama from Mt. Kanpu, named one of the three best sights in the world.

    Despite two large tour groups soon to arrive, orders were happily taken and quickly prepared. Reasonable price for tasty food. Device vends tickets easily dispensed with pictures of the products...

    One of the best sunset-viewing spots in Oga Peninsula, this site offers a sweeping view of Toga Bay, Ichinome-gata, Ninome-gata, the Ou Mountain range, and even the Aomori Prefecture border. This place is famous for receiving its name from Their Highness Prince Takamatsu.

    This gentle 355 meter tall composite volcano is famed for its scenery. It has a number of sights, like Oni no Kakuresato, a rock hill said to be home to Namahage; a spring water area known for its purity, and waterfall headwaters. The peak has an observation facility and the fourth floor rotating observatory offers a panoramic view taking in the Oga Peninsula’s beaches, Mt. Chokai, the Shirakami-Sanchi, and Ogata village. The mountain is girded with Chinese silver grass from the middle section to the peak, and in in Autumn the grass glitters silver-white in the sun for a mystical spectacle.

    The Hamabe no Uta Ongaku-kan Museum is a historical museum dedicated to the life and work of Narita Tamezo, the composer of “Kanariya” (“Canary”), which is said to be the earliest Japanese children’s song. The Museum takes its name from one of Narita’s best-known works: “Hamabe no Uta” (“A Song at the Seaside”). The Museum is housed in a retro, Western-style building. The first floor has listening spaces where visitors can listen to various different songs; the second floor is devoted to exhibition space. The stage in this part of the Museum has a large grand piano and a life-size model of Narita Tamezo; player piano performances are accompanied by explanations of the history of children’s songs in Japan.

    成田為三という音楽家のことは全く知りませんでしたが、「浜辺の歌」「かなりや」という曲は聞いたことがあり知っていました。成田為三のロボットがあったりしてなかなか面白い記念館でした。

    This is a seafood specialty and local goods shop in Konbu-ura, Kitaura-nyudozaki, Oga City. They serve seafood rice bowls like the Seafood Namahage Bowl with abalone, as well as fisherman cuisine like Zappa Jiru fish soup and Stone Grilled Meals, ramen, rice and curry and more. And when red sea bream is in season, they offer sashimi, salt-grilled and sea bream Zappa Jiru sets in the Meibutsu Madai Gozen (by reservation only). Their large hall on the second flood can accommodate large groups, as well. Their shop sells sea goods, local crafts, and more.

    入道岬にある、レストランで大雪の天気にもかかわらず開いていて、温かい店内で昼食を食べました。 値段の割には「海鮮ラーメン」は美味しくて、体が温まりました。

    This diner is on Prefectural Route 55 in Oga city's Konbuura, Kitaura Nyudozaki. They offer a full menu, with many dishes using Oga's fresh seafood. Their hefty Ganso Uni-don (sea urchin bowl) is particularly popular. They also have original UFO don rice bowls and UFO ramen, inspired by a mysterious object the shop owner saw in Nyudozaki. Their shop offers local specialties as well as crafts made from coral and seashells.

    This is a bear-only zoo in Aza-Jinba, Aniutto, Kitaakita City. You can get up close to the brown bears and Asian black bears raised in the park. In addition to feeding and other activities, they have baby bear petting events. Tours are reservation-only from December to March.

    This waterfall is located in the Nakanomata Valley in the Sugeyaji area of Aniutsuto, Kita-Akita City. A majestic waterfall with two levels and falling 90 meters, its name is said to come from the nearly 300-year old Tragic Legend of Yasu Falls, where a young lady named Yasu jumped into the waterfall thinking of her lover. Known for its landscape in autumn with colored leaves and fresh greenery, it is ranked second in the Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan.

Displays include fishing equipment used before its reclamation, pictures of the area drawn by Edo period travel writer Sugae Masumi, and more.

    This roadside station is along National Route 101. The direct-sales facility next door Orahonokan offers fresh, seasonal farm products, and the restaurant serves delicious Ishikawa Soba. The information corner allows traffic updates via their touch screen panels. The Nishikaigan Herb Garden is also nearby, and from late June into July they hold a Lavender Festival.

    good for local products. the ladies in the store did not sell jizake - local sake nihonshu - but put us in touch with the local sake brewer so we could go over there directly and buy great akita sake.
