  • Garo Falls

    Akita Pref. Yamamotogunfujisatomachi Fujikoto Great fall
    This waterfall is located in Takinosawa, Fujikoto, Fujisato Town, Yamamoto County. The area around the falls has been built into a park dedicated to promoting affinity with water. It is a popular spot for experiencing the seasonal nature of the valley, including the fresh spring greenery and the fall foliage. Sugae Masumi, the late Edo period traveler who spent his final years in Akita, visited the falls. A stone monument bearing the waka poem he wrote during that visit stands near the falls.

    A mountain that spans Fujisato Town, Akita Prefecture, and Ajigasawa Town, Aomori Prefecture. It stands almost 1087 meters tall and is also called Mt. Tomaridake. It features a wealth of nature including an old growth Japanese beech forest and when blessed with good weather from the summit you can see the mountains of the Shirakami mountain region as well as the Sea of Japan and the Oga Peninsula.

    A nature observation forest in the Fujikotosawa National Forest in the Fujikoto region of Fujisato Town, Yamamoto County. It's located in the Shirakami mountain region between Mt. Fujisato-komagadake and Mt. Sangaiyama near the head of the Fujikoto River. The site has a walking trail allowing you to explore the deep nature of the Shirakami Mountains and the old-growth Japanese beech forest with giant trees over 400 years old more easily than if you were mountain climbing.

    A scenic valley location in Happo Town, Yamamoto County, located along the Mase River which originates in the Shirakami mountain region. The name comes from 30 potholes called Oketsu carved out of the riverbed by stones caught in the river current (Sanju is Japanese for 30). The surrounding area has a series of paths allowing you to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery interwoven with the mountain streams including the Ouketsu potholes, unusual boulders, and verdant green new growth or changing autumn colors.

    This waterfall is located in the Nakanomata Valley in the Sugeyaji area of Aniutsuto, Kita-Akita City. A majestic waterfall with two levels and falling 90 meters, its name is said to come from the nearly 300-year old Tragic Legend of Yasu Falls, where a young lady named Yasu jumped into the waterfall thinking of her lover. Known for its landscape in autumn with colored leaves and fresh greenery, it is ranked second in the Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan.

    This is an approx. 1,454 meter high mountain in Kitaakita City, Akita Prefecture. The highest areas offer views of alpine flowers like shiraneaoi (glaucidium palmatum) and hinazakura cherry. Chosen as one of Japan's 100 Best Flower Mountains, it's very popular with climbers in the blossom season. There is also a very popular gondola to the peak.

    This marsh is in Towada-Hachimantai National Park, in Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture. This is known as the largest marsh in Hachimantai. In addition to viewing alpine plants like Asian Skunk Cabbage and hare's-tail cottongrass, it also offers wonderful autumn leaf viewing. They also offer special Onuma Guide Walk events on weekends and holidays for local residents and tourists.

    "A mountain located in Hachimori, Happo Town, Yamamoto County, Akita Prefecture. The mountain's name, which literally translates to ""Stop Mountain,"" is said to be derived from an order to stop lumbering on the mountain. In order to preserve the area's fountainhead, it has been protected since the Edo period, and even today visitors can take in the area's natural beech forest. Situated not even 200 meters above sea level, and with a walking path, it's easy for visitors to enjoy trekking here, but a local guide is required to climb the actual mountain."
  • Nanataki Falls

    "A waterfall situated along the Jukai Line in Fujiwara, Uwamuki, Kosaka Town, Kazuno County, Akita Prefecture. Falling 60 meters in total, the falls' name, which literally translates to ""Seven Waterfalls,"" is derived from the fact that it consists of seven tiers. Selected for inclusion in a list of 100 elections of the waterfall in Japan, Nanataki Shrine, dedicated to the dragon king, is located below the falls, while Roadside Station Kosaka Nanataki stands across from the falls on the other side of the road."

    A pine forest, the largest in Japan, sprawling along the coast in Noshiro City. Today consisting of seven million pine trees, the forest is equal in area to 163 Tokyo Domes. The forest was planted during the Edo period to prevent sand from the coast getting blown inland by the area's powerful winds. The area has been selected for inclusion in many lists, including a selection of Japan's top 100 natural areas people which to see preserved into the 21st century. Popular area highlights include a walking path paved with wood chips and a wooden playground and obstacle course where children can play.
  • Komata Valley

    Akita Kita-akita-shi Moriyoshi
    A virgin valley consisting of over 100 waterfalls, giant's kettles, and abysses, the source of the river which carved the valley lies in the untouched forest of the Noro River at the eastern foot of Mt. Moriyoshi. A 1.8 kilometer long walking path leads away from the Komata Valley boat dock and visitors can walk the path and take in the area's distinctive waterfalls. Stunning 20 meter tall Sangai Waterfall is the walking path's endpoint. Coming during the fresh verdure and fall foliage seasons is particularly recommended.
