    Akita Pref. Yuzawashi Minase Aratokoro
Oyasukyo is a famous spot in Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, in Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture. Located in a valley at 60 meter elevation, this hot spring is set apart by the boiling water and steam bubbling forth from bare rock. With its well-maintained trails, you can get a close look at the layers of bedrock holding back intense natural heat, with cracks letting out clouds of steam and hot water. It's also famous for its fall leaf viewing, and its popular sightseeing spot equipped with parking areas.

Akita Pref. Sembokushi Kakunodatemachi ツキ Tazawako
This picturesque spot is also known as Tohoku’s Yabakei. They say the name, meaning “returned embrace,” comes from the trails so narrow, two people couldn’t pass “without embracing.” It’s now designated part of Tazawako Dakigaeri Prefectural Natural Park. With its well-maintained trails, waterfalls of various size, and brilliant red suspension bridge, it offers a variety of pleasures. Currently, the trail is closed past Mikaeri Falls due to fallen rocks. In addition. the trails are closed every year from late November to late April due to heavy snow.
  • Mase Valley Sanjugama

    Akita Yamamoto-gun Happocho
A scenic valley location in Happo Town, Yamamoto County, located along the Mase River which originates in the Shirakami mountain region. The name comes from 30 potholes called Oketsu carved out of the riverbed by stones caught in the river current (Sanju is Japanese for 30). The surrounding area has a series of paths allowing you to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery interwoven with the mountain streams including the Ouketsu potholes, unusual boulders, and verdant green new growth or changing autumn colors.

    Akita Yuzawa-shi
A valley at the entrance of Kawarage Jigoku. As you gaze over the valley from the Sanzugawa Bridge suspended nearly 40-meters above the mountain river and look at the precipitous cliffs on either side you'll come to understand the naming of the bridge and the valley (Sanzu River is the Buddhist equivalent of the River Styx that souls must cross into the afterlife). On either side of the bridge stand four stone statues, Lord Enma and Lord Taizan on one side, and Longevity Jizo and Praying Jizo on the other. The autumn changing colors of the foliage is superb.

    Iwami, Akita-shi, Akita-ken, Kawanobe cho
Soya Gorge is up the Iwamigawa River. Among the cliffs that look like folding screens you can see spectacular sights of mountain cherry blossoms in the spring, fresh greenery in the summer, and autumnal colors in the fall. Up river is Funoshi-no-taki Waterfall, a scenic shot that is iconic of Okuzashiki.

  • Komata Valley

    Akita Kita-akita-shi Moriyoshi
A virgin valley consisting of over 100 waterfalls, giant's kettles, and abysses, the source of the river which carved the valley lies in the untouched forest of the Noro River at the eastern foot of Mt. Moriyoshi. A 1.8 kilometer long walking path leads away from the Komata Valley boat dock and visitors can walk the path and take in the area's distinctive waterfalls. Stunning 20 meter tall Sangai Waterfall is the walking path's endpoint. Coming during the fresh verdure and fall foliage seasons is particularly recommended.

Akita Areas

around-area-map

Famed for its sake and samurai, Akita prefecture offers quintessential Japanese culture in a non-touristy setting. Alongside the celebrated rice paddies and historical sites of the region lies dramatic natural scenery in the form of the rugged coastline of the Oga Peninsula and the Dakigaeri Gorge, best visited in autumn, when the leaves begin to change color.
