Travel / Tourism Spots in Sanriku Area

  • Mt. Otakamori
    Travel / Tourism
    Miyagi Pref. Higashimatsushimashi Miyato
Named best of Matsushima’s four great sights, the observation platform at the peak of this small mountain offers a gorgeous panorama view. There is a precipitous coast, Saga Gorge, to the east, Matsushima Bay stretches from the west to the south, with views of the sea and islands dotting in a beautiful scene. The north holds a broad view of Ishinomaki townscape.
  • Ogama-Hanzo, Oreishi
    Travel / Tourism
Karuwa Town, Kesennuma City, Miyagi ken
This group of rock formations in Sanriku Fukko (reconstruction) National Park that extends from southern Aomori Prefecture to the Oshika Peninsula in Miyagi Prefecture is one of its officially designated a Place of Scenic Beauty. The cove known as Ogama has been carved out of the rock in the shape of a rounded cooking pot, giving the landform its name (ogama means big pot in Japanese). There's a view of the waves continually breaking against it from Hanzo. Another formation in the shape of a slender stone tower is about 16 meters high. Two meters broke off due to the tsunami that resulted from the 1896 Sanriku earthquake, so it's known as the Oreishi, or broken rock. There is also a promenade between running between Ogama and Hanzo, a rest house, and a parking lot.
  • Mt. Tokusenjosan
    Travel / Tourism
    Miyagi Prefecture
This 711-meter mountain is at the boundary between Kesennuma City and the former town of Motoyoshi. It's very famous for viewing azaleas from the middle to the end of May when the whole place bursts into a beautiful scene of red and green. With about 500,000 plants covering a range of 50 hectares, the colorful scenery reaches from the mountain summit to the Pacific Ocean. It takes about 45 minutes from the trail head to the summit, making it accessible to beginners as well, assuming they have the proper clothing and other hiking items. Expect big crowds on Saturdays and Sundays during the season. If you want to take your time and enjoy it, we recommend going on weekdays.
  • Cape Iwaisaki
    Travel / Tourism
    Miyagi Pref. Kesennumashi Hajikamiwaisaki
This sightseeing spot with a variety of natural landmarks is 25 minutes by car from JR Kesennuma Station. Various fossils have been discovered there dating from the Paleozoic era's Permian period 250 million years ago. It's been designated a Miyagi Prefecture Natural Monument. At the end of the cape there is a blowhole formed by sea water erosion over the eons. It spouts the surf into the air every time they break on the rocks, and when the waves are high, the site is truly impressive. There is also a tree called the Dragon Pine that gained its current dragon-like form from the tsunami after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The statue of the sumo grand champion Hidenoyama Raigoro also survived the tsunami and you can still see it today.

Lying along the northeastern coast of Japan, Miyagi prefecture is home to lashings of natural parks, oysters, and hot springs. While the bustling city of Sendai offers some simple city entertainment, it’s the Matsushima islands that deserve the most attention, having boosted the prefecture’s reputation as one of Japan’s most scenic views.
