This temple is about a ten-minute drive from Kunimi Station on the JR Senzan Line. It's also known popularly as Sendai Daikannon after the 100-meter-high statue with this name. Built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Sendai municipal system and to wish for prosperity in the 21st century, its foundation reaches 21 meters underground. Daikokudo with its red torii gates is also on the grounds. It honors Aburakake Daikokuten and is known as a matchmaking spot. Every month on the 18th, Kannon Bodhisattva's festival day, they hold lectures that expound the teachings of Buddhism in an easily accessible way. Anyone interested in Buddhism can participate for free. They also hold pet memorial services.

The statue is huge, the largest in the world when it was built but has since slipped down the rankings a bit. Its free to walk around it and there is a small entry fee when we went inside it. On the...

A museum where you can experience the Paleolithic located a five minute walk from the subway Nagamachi-Minami Station. The museum conserves and displays the actual Tomizawa Site, an archeological site and one of only a few in the world dating back 20 thousand years to the Paleolithic. The museum also has exciting exhibits which recreate what life looked like for human beings at that time. In the basement gallery, visitors can view the remains for a bonfire and forest from 20 thousand years ago. In the outdoor ice age forest exhibit, visitors can view seasonal flowers and insects in a recreated ice age forest.

"A 15-minute drive from the Sendai-minami interchange and a 20-minute drive from the Sendai-Miyagi interchange. This art museum is also located right next to the ""Matsuba"" bus stop. As its name states, this museum displays kaleidoscopes and also holds kaleidoscope making classes. The museum displays a wide array of kaleidoscopes, from huge kaleidoscopes to antique examples to kaleidoscopes made by modern artists. Some of the museum's kaleidoscopes can also be used to take pictures. The museum's short kaleidoscope making classes are fun, easy, and take just 10 to 30 minutes. The museum shop sells inexpensively priced kaleidoscopes to true kaleidoscope masterpieces."

This is worth the trip from Sendai! We were impressed with the creativity and diversity of kaleidoscopes. Really an international collection! Great for adults with it without children!

This shrine is a three-minute walk from the JR Senseki Line's Tsutsujigaoka Station. It honors Tenijn, a god of scholarship and the deified form of Sugawara no Michizane. Loved by the locals, every year during exam season it fills with students and their parents praying for success. There are a number of stone stele with haiku carved on them on the precincts, including one by Matsuo Basho. There's also a nade-ushi statue of a cow tied to a legend concerning Sugawara no Michizane. Lots of visitors come annually to see various flowers in bloom, like cherry blossoms, azaleas, and Sugawara no Michizane's beloved plum blossoms.

Miyagi Sendai-shi Miyagino-ku Gorin 1-3-7 Tsutsujigaoka Park Nai
This museum is located inside Tsutsujigaoka Park in Gorin 1-Chome, Miyagino Ward, Sendai City. The museum was built inside the former barracks of the old Fourth Infantry Regimentof the Japanese Imperial Army’s Second Division. It features three permanent exhibits on the themes of agriculture and the lives of farmers in the Sendai region, the lives of people in Sendai’s urban areas, and the lives of the soldiers of the old Fourth Infantry Regiment, respectively. The museum also features a permanent exhibit on disaster-affected regions and holds special exhibits. There is also a hands-on learning room where visitors can play with toys from yesteryear.

Akiu Shrine is located right at the center of Akiu Sato in Sendai City. It's said that the deity of Kumano-jinja Shrine was first brought here over 1,200 years ago when the shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro subjugated the Emishi in the year 808. In the Muromachi period, the shrine came to be associated with a war god, and today it's honored by a flow of visitors from around the country for help winning contests and games. An unusual persimmon tree on the grounds is also enshrined as a god of matchmaking. Other sacred trees include a gingko dedicated to childrearing, a lucky cherry tree, and a luster-leaf holly tree with matchmaking powers.

Four kilometers from the Tohoku Expressway Sendai-minami interchange on National Route 286 traveling towards downtown Sendai City. This facility, dedicated to providing visitors with the opportunity to come in contact with and experience Jomon culture, was built to conserve and utilize the Yamadauenodai Jomon period archeological site. There are recreations of the grove, village square, storage pits, and pit dwellings which existed at this vast Jomon period village some 4,000 years ago, reproducing the village and surrounding environment as it once looked. Fun Jomon period classes such as pottery and stone tool creation, fire making, and magatama comma-shaped jewelry making are held in the village square. A variety of events are also held here such as recreations of Jomon period festivals.
