    Miyagi Miyagi-gun Matsushimamachi Matsushima
This is a highland in Sakuragaokairi, Matsushima Town, Miyagi County. Along with Otakamori, Mt. Tamon, and Mt. Tomiyama in Matsushima Town, it is one of the four prime spots for viewing the rocky islands of Matsushima, long considered one of Japan’s great beauty spots. The site got its name (“fan valley”) from the view of fan-shaped Matsushima Bay.

    Miyagi Pref. Higashimatsushimashi Miyato
Named best of Matsushima’s four great sights, the observation platform at the peak of this small mountain offers a gorgeous panorama view. There is a precipitous coast, Saga Gorge, to the east, Matsushima Bay stretches from the west to the south, with views of the sea and islands dotting in a beautiful scene. The north holds a broad view of Ishinomaki townscape.
  • Takimidai

Miyagi Pref. Kattagunzaoumachi Togattaonsen Kuraishi-dake National Forest
One of the most picturesque locations found in the Zao Mountain Range. A parking area is located nearby on the Zao Echo Line road and can accommodate around 10 vehicles. Two waterfalls can be seen from Takimidai. The waterfall with the greater water flow is Fudo Falls; boasting a 54 meter drop, the falls are watched over by a statue of the Buddhist deity Acala called the Zao Fudoson. The other waterfall, the thin Sanriku Falls, winds its way through the mountains to drop three times into deep basins and has been selected as one of the 100 most beautiful waterfalls in Japan. The beauty of this location is a favorite topic for poets and visitors will find a stone monument inscribed with a waka poem by Reiu Uda here.

Miyagi prefecture Higashimatsushima-shi, Miyagi-gun Matsushima cho, Miyagi gun Nanaishihama cho
A term referring to four observatories with sweeping views of beautiful Matsushima Bay. The Sokan Observatory is located on lofty Mt. Otakamori standing in the center of Miyato Island across from the bay. The Reikan Observatory on the top of the mountain offers a sweeping with of the east, south, and west sides of the bay. The Ikan Observatory in the Tamonzan area looks out over the ocean from the cliffs of Cape Yogasaki at the northern tip of Shichigahama Town. The Yukan Observatory, located in the Ogitani area (folding fan valley), so called because the inlet of Matsushima Bay resembles a folding fan as seen from mountaintop, is located on high ground behind Sokanzan. Whichever you visit, you can enjoy a lovely view of the charming bay.
  • Shintomiyama Observatory
    Travel / Tourism
    Matsushima cho Miyagi-gun, Miyagi prefecture
This observatory is at the summit of Matsushima Town's Mt. Shintomi. Overlooking all of Matsushima Bay, people say the scenery changes with every 30 centimeters you ascend. It also has a sweeping view of Matsushima's townscape and a great nighttime view with fishing fires dancing above the water after sunset. The tourist sites of Zuiganji and Godaido Temples are within walking distance, and you can also easily stroll there from the Matsushima coast. As it doesn't have its own parking lot, we recommend getting there on foot.

Lying along the northeastern coast of Japan, Miyagi prefecture is home to lashings of natural parks, oysters, and hot springs.
