  • Large Shrine Gate

    Miyagi Katta-gun
    This shrine gate is located in Oniishihara, Togattaonsen, Zao Town, Katta County. It stands over the entrance to the Zao Echo Line on the Miyagi Prefecture side of this road that connects Zao Town in Miyagi Prefecture to Kaminoyama City in Yamagata Prefecture. The massive vermilion-lacquered shrine gate also serves as the entrance of the approach to Kattamine Shrine, which stands at the summit of Mt. Katta.

    This nature observation center is located in Uwanohara, Togattaonsen, Zao Town, Katta County. It is adjacent to the Zao Wild Bird Forest. The center introduces the natural environment of Zao and the rest of Miyagi and the ecology of the wild birds that live there through a variety of exhibits such as nature dioramas and taxidermy specimens. It also organizes a number of events including trekking, nature observation, and crafts.
  • Zaoji Temple

    Miyagi Katta-gun Zao Machi Togatta Onsen Kuraishi Take Kokuyurin Uchi
    This temple is located on the Zao Echo Line in Kuraishidake kokuyurinchi-nai, Togattaonsen, Zao Town, Katta County. It was founded by En no Ozunu, the founder of the Shugendo sect of Japanese mountain asceticism, sometime in the late seventh century to early eighth centuryand used as a training center for mountain Buddhism. Although the temple was abandoned in the Meiji period, it would later undergo a revival. The temple enshrines the Enmei Jizoson as its primary object of worship.
  • Kattamine Shrine

    This shrine is located at the summit of Mount Katta, in Kuraishidakekokuyuchinai Togattaonsen, Zao, Katta District. Amanomikumari no kami and Kuninomikumari no kami are enshrined here. In the winter, the rear shrine is relocated from the summit of the mountain to the Satomiya at the foot of the mountain.

    This stone monument is located in Zao Echo Line inKuraishidake Kokuyuchi-nai, Togattaonsen, Zao Town, Katta County. The large stone monument, which bears a carved image of the Zao Fudoson, is enshrined near Takimidai Lookout. Takimidai Lookout offers visitors views of three waterfalls including Fudotaki Falls, the largest waterfall in Zao.

    This historical museum adjacent to the Daigigakoi Shell Mound, a government-designated historical site, is located in 2-Chome Sakaiyama, Shichigahama Town, Miyagi County. It exhibits items including artifacts excavated from more than 40 archeological sites in Shichigahama including the Daigigakoi Shell Mound as well as folk materials such as old fishing and agriculture implements.

    This museum in Fugendo, Matsushima, Matsushima Town, Miyagi Countyfeatures three collections. The first is a collection of music boxes conveyed from the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. The second is a toy collection provided by Kitahara Teruhisa, a well-known toy collector. The third is a collection of tailored luxury clothing from the Golden Age of Haute Couture. The museum also features a cafe that serves light meals as well as a museum shop.
  • Aone Western Style House

    This historical building is located on National Route 457 in Aoneonsen, Kawasaki Town, Shibata County. Built in Sendai during the Meiji period as a residence for missionaries, it was later relocated to its current location. The first floor of the home features a tourist information center and a cafe. The second floor serves as a memorial hall to Koga Masao, a composer with connections to Aone Onsen.

    This local product promotion center is located inside of Ubagafutokoro Minwa no Sato on Prefectural Route 25 in Iboishi, Koizumi, Murata Town, Shibata County. It sells products from the local area and around the region. It also sells fresh local produce every Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can also enjoy soba noodles made with local buckwheat flour, broad bean and rice flour noodles, and other dishes at the attached soba restaurant.

    This important preservation district of historic buildings is located in Murata Town, Shibata County. Long ago the region prospered as a trading hub on the highway that connected Sendai and Yamagata. Even now, it retains rows of storehouses owned by the merchants of Murata, who engaged businesses such as the safflower trade. The Kura no Machi Murata Hotei Festival is held here every October.
  • Nonaka Shrine

    This Shinto shrine is located in 2-Chome Ichibancho, Aoba Ward, Sendai City. The shrine stands quietly on a back lane off of a shopping street. The shrine is said to grant worshippers prosperous business and luck in finding love and marriage. It is believed the shrine was built on top of a buried rope used to mark out neighborhood delineations when the castle town around Sendai Castle was built by Date Masamune. In late July, the shrine holds the Ichibancho Three Shrine Festival together with Ebisu Shrine and Warei Shrine.
  • Grave of Hayashi Shihe

    This grave is located on the grounds of Ryuunin Temple in Shihei-machi, Aoba Ward, Sendai City. It is the final resting place of military scholar Hayashi Shihei. Hayashi was imprisoned by the Tokugawa Shogunate after penning “Kaikoku Heidan,” which advocated for a stronger national defense. The grave has also been designated as a National Historical Site.
  • Tagajo Castle Temple Ruins

    A historical site in Takasaki 3 Chome, Tagajo City. It's maintained as a historical park housing the remains of a temple that was constructed at the same time as Tagajo Castle. Based on archealogical finds from the area there's a high possibility that the temple was called Kanzeon-ji Temple and the layout of the temple was very similar to that of the Kanzeon-ji Temple in Dazaifu.
  • Mutsu Sosha no Miya Shrine

    Miyagi Tagajo-shi Ichikawa Sosha 1
    A shrine in Ichikawa Sosha, Tagajo City. The shrine is said to have been founded in the first half of the 10th century and enshrines over 100 gods of the Mutsu Province. They hold a festival every year on the third Sunday of April and after a Shinto ritual a portable shrine is carried through the local area.

    A stone monument in Ichikawa Tayaba, Tagajo City. It dates back to the Nara period and is escribed with information about the founding of Tagajo Castle including its distance from Nara, the capital city at the time. The monument is the origin of the Tsubo no Ishibumi phrase that can be found in classical poetry and was mentioned by famous poet Matsuo Basho in his Oku no Hosomichi travel account.
  • Historic Yubikan and Garden

    A historic building in Iwadeyama Kamikawara Town, Osaki City, in front of Yubikan Station. It was used as a school by the Iwadeyama Date family, founded by Muneyasu the fourth son of Date Masamune, and the buildings and garden have been preserved including the Gokaijo hall where the head of the Date family would give lectures. This location has been designated as both a historic location and a place of scenic beauty. In August they hold the Yubikan Festival with an evening illumination of the grounds.
  • Miyazawa Site

    Miyagi Osaki-shi Furukawa Miyazawa Atagoyama
    A historical site in FurukawamiyazawaAtagoyama, Osaki City. The expansive grounds cover 1400 meters east to west and 850 meters north to south and include the historical remains of a castle fence that stood from the Nara period to the Heian period as well as a governmental office called Kanga. It was discovered during the excavation for the construction of the Tohoku Expressway and has been designated as a national historic site. The Atagoyama region is maintained as a historic park.
  • Matsuyama Furusato History Museum

    A museum in Matsuyamasengoku Matsuyama, Osaki City. In the History Exhibition you'll find materials related to the history of the region including information about the Moniwa family, the former chief vassal family of the Sendai domain. In the Frank Nagai Exhibition,they have materials regarding Frank Nagai, a famous singer who came from the area. The museum's collection includes a wooden seated statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon which has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan and the famous Yamatoden sword, crafted by the swordsmith, the Eight Generation HokkeSaburoNobufusa.
  • Shitomae no Seki

    A historical site in NarukoOnsenShitomae, Osaki City. This was the location where a checkpoint had been established during the Sengoku period at a strategic point along the Dewa Kaido Road. In 1670 it was turned into the Shitomae Guardhouse by the local ruling Date family. In famous poet Matsuo Basho's work Oku no Hosomichi he tells of when he and his student Sora were passing through the checkpoint and fell under the suspicions of a government official.

    A temple in UwanumaMirokujiTerayama, Nakada Town, Tome City. The temple started as a small thatched hut established by pilgrims in the 7th century. The principal object of worship is a seated statue of the Miroku Buddha which is only unveiled to the public once every 33 years. An annual festival called the O-Miroku-san Night Festival is held on August 15th and 16th and draws large crowds every year.
