Inari Shrine in the center of Iwanuma City, is located about an 11 minute walk from Iwanuma Station. It is regarded as one of Japan’s three main Inari shrines, and is also known as “Takekoma Inari”. The shrine was established in 842, when Ono no Takamura was sent as the new lord of Mutsu who also wrote for the ogura hyakunin-isshu poems. It is a popular shrine with the first or second most visitors worshipping the god of food, clothing and shelter for the first prayer of the year every year. In addition, the “Hatsu Uma Festival” is held for seven days from the first Uma (horse) day (the seventh day of the twelve horary signs) of February (lunar calendar). The festival represents the first sign of spring and the shrine bustles with many visitors from both within and outside the prefecture.

We were in Iwanuma to celebrate our sons wedding at this shrine. Few words can describe the overall experience of celebrating a traditional Japanese wedding at one of the most stunning shrines in...

This temple is about a ten-minute drive from Kunimi Station on the JR Senzan Line. It's also known popularly as Sendai Daikannon after the 100-meter-high statue with this name. Built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Sendai municipal system and to wish for prosperity in the 21st century, its foundation reaches 21 meters underground. Daikokudo with its red torii gates is also on the grounds. It honors Aburakake Daikokuten and is known as a matchmaking spot. Every month on the 18th, Kannon Bodhisattva's festival day, they hold lectures that expound the teachings of Buddhism in an easily accessible way. Anyone interested in Buddhism can participate for free. They also hold pet memorial services.

The statue is huge, the largest in the world when it was built but has since slipped down the rankings a bit. Its free to walk around it and there is a small entry fee when we went inside it. On the...

The museum conserves and displays the actual Tomizawa Site, an archeological site and one of only a few in the world dating back 20 thousand years to the Paleolithic. The museum also has exciting exhibits which recreate what life looked like for human beings at that time. In the basement gallery, visitors can view the remains for a bonfire and forest from 20 thousand years ago. In the outdoor ice age forest exhibit, visitors can view seasonal flowers and insects in a recreated ice age forest.

Shiogama-jinja Shrine is known for its shiogama cherry tree that has been designated as a Natural Monument of Japan. The main enshrined deities are Shiotsuchinooji, Takemikazuchi-no-kami and Futsunushi-no-kami, but the details before the Edo period are not very clear. Construction of the current shaden (main building) was completed in 1704, and 14 buildings including the honden (main shrine) and haiden (hall of worship) and the stone torii gate have been designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The deities are believed to answer a variety of prayers including those for safety at sea, success in catching fish, protection and easy delivery during childbirth, traffic safety, and for protection against misfortune. The deities are revered by the locals, and regardless of the type of prayer they will make their way to this shrine.

This shrine is located in Kinkasan, Ayukawahama, Ishinomaki City. The shrine was built in celebration of the discovery of the first gold mine in Japan in 749 in what is now Wakuya Town. The first gold mined there was then presented to the imperial court. The shrine, which stands on Mt. Kinkaoff the shores of the Oshika Peninsula, enshrines Kanayamahiko-no-kami and Kanayamahime-no-kami, the Shinto deities of gold. The shrine has also venerated the Buddhist deity Benzaiten ever since the age of syncretism of kami and buddhas. Many have come to worship Benzaiten as the deity of luck and economic fortune.

A roadside station situated on National Route 14 in Murata Town, Shibata County, Miyagi Prefecture. The station building is modeled after an old-fashioned Japanese white-walled kura warehouse. Inside, the station has a corner selling local vegetables as well dishes made with broad beans, a local specialty product; rice; pottery; and more. The adjoining Restaurant Shiroyama serves beef tongue Hayashi rice, broad bean tempura zaru-udon noodles, and kaki-age broad bean udon noodles. The noodles made with broad beans and rice flour are particularly popular.

"A seven minute walk from Kita-Sendai Station on the JR Senzan Line and Sendai Subway Namboku Line. This Shinto shrine was established in 1874 and is dedicated to Date Masamune (known as Takefuruhiko-no-Mikoto), former lord of the bygone Sendai Domain. The shrine holds the Sendai Aoba Festival on the third Sunday in May each year in honor of the anniversary of Masamune's death on May 25. Six of the shrine's structures, including the main shrine building and front shrine, have been designated National Tangible Cultural Properties. The Toki no Taiko (""Drum of Time""), one of the shrine's treasures kept in the front shrine, was made some 300 years ago and is still used to announce the time each morning in Sendai."

"A 15-minute drive from the Sendai-minami interchange and a 20-minute drive from the Sendai-Miyagi interchange. This art museum is also located right next to the ""Matsuba"" bus stop. As its name states, this museum displays kaleidoscopes and also holds kaleidoscope making classes. The museum displays a wide array of kaleidoscopes, from huge kaleidoscopes to antique examples to kaleidoscopes made by modern artists. Some of the museum's kaleidoscopes can also be used to take pictures. The museum's short kaleidoscope making classes are fun, easy, and take just 10 to 30 minutes. The museum shop sells inexpensively priced kaleidoscopes to true kaleidoscope masterpieces."

This is worth the trip from Sendai! We were impressed with the creativity and diversity of kaleidoscopes. Really an international collection! Great for adults with it without children!

Loved by the locals, every year during exam season it fills with students and their parents praying for success. There are a number of stone stele with haiku carved on them on the precincts, including one by Matsuo Basho. There's also a nade-ushi statue of a cow tied to a legend concerning Sugawara no Michizane. Zao-cho, Kariya-gun, Miyagi prefecture
Lake Okama is a round crater lake on Goshikidake Peak in the Zao Range, and it is a famous scenic spot, considered a symbolic place in the Goshiki Zao region. It is surrounded by three peaks, Zao Karitadake Peak, Kumanodake Peak, and Goshikidake Peak, and it derives its name, which means “kettle,” due to its shape. Due to the concentration of sulfur and other chemicals in the water, the surface of the lake can take on a turquoise or emerald green color, creating a mystic landscape. This lake is unique among the world’s lakes in that it has multiple temperature layers, with the water hotter at certain depths. Due to the acidity of the water, no living organisms inhabit the lake.

The origin of kokeshi wooden dolls is said to have been in Naruko towards the end of the Edo period (1804–1830) when they were made as hot spring souvenirs by woodworkers who carved bowls and trays and this is said to be the oldest production area for these dolls. The museum opened in 1975. It exhibits kokeshi offered up for the National Kokeshi Festival, presents the procedure for making the dolls, demonstrates the spinning lathe and has a wholesale shop that sells the highest number of kokeshi dolls in Naruko.
