It is a subdued one-story Japanese-style building with a tile roof within sight of Hiraizumi Station. Customers obtain refills of the small servings at their own individual pace. The popular Special Wanko Soba consists of soba portioned out into 24 small bowls, coming with things like spices, large servings of tempura, or fruit. Customers who want a quick and easy way to enjoy soba can order Zaru Soba, which is served cold with dipping sauce on the side, or Tempura Soba, topped with deep-fried seafood or vegetables.

    Mt. Kinkeizan is located almost exactly at the midpoint between Chusonji Temple and Motsuji Temple. Legend has it that a pair of golden chickens, a male and a female, are buried at the summit of the mountain to protect the town of Hiraizumi; hence the name of the mountain, which means “Golden Chicken Mountain.” This mountain is mentioned in “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” the poetic travel diary of the 17th century haiku poet Matsuo Basho, and near the beginning of the climbing trail is a small memorial pagoda marking the graves of the wife and child of the 12th century warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune.

    This is a derelict temple in Hiraizumi, Hiraizumi-cho, Nishi-iwai County. This temple was built by order of the third Oshu Fujiwara lord, Fujiwara no Hidehira. The now destroyed main hall was said to be a copy of Uji Byodo-in temple in Kyoto, and these ruins are now preserved as a National Historic Landmark.

    The Gikeido is located on a hill east of the Minamoto no Yoshitsune said to be where Minamoto no Yoshitsune breathed his last. Dedicated to Yoshitsune, the shrine location looks out over the Kitakami River and the Kinu River, said to have brought the mighty warrior Benkei to a standstill. Also the site where the renowned a haiku poet Matsuo Basho composed his poem alluding to the “site of summer grasses and warriors’ dreams,” a stone monument inscribed with this very verse stands on the right hand side of the hill.

    This restaurant serves local cuisine and is famous for its mochi rice cake dishes. It was established in 1991 and is located three minutes on foot from the West Entrance of Ichinoseki Station. The Original Bite-sized Mochi Set is a selection of eight bite-sized mochi including those with red bean jam, green soy bean jam and natto (fermented soy beans) and some grated Japanese radish in a bento box with nine sections, accompanied by ozoni (mochi soup). Customers can savor the mochi, hand-made from the best mochi rice, Kogane-mochi, to their heart’s content. There is also an Omotenashi Set, dishes combined with the Bite-sized Mochi Set.

    Yanagi Palace Ruins Historic Park is a historic site in the town of Hiraizumi, Nishi-Iwai County, Iwate Prefecture. Excavations have revealed the remains of earth-fast post construction and groups of compounds, and there is said to be a strong possibility that the site is the remains of the Hiraizumi headquarters of Fujiwara Hidehira. Of the 10 hectare site, about half has been set aside as Yanagi Palace Ruins Historic Park, with the ponds, ditches, and paths restored.
