This museum is located in Kamasuda, Hachimantai City. It houses a collection of materials about the culture and history of the old town, which grew up as a key transport center leading to Tsugaru and Akita. Its four permanent exhibitions are “Life and Culture in the Appikawa and Yoneshiro Watersheds,” “Lacquerware: Beauty in the Midst of Everyday Life,” “Carrying Past Ways of Life into the Present Day,” and “Literature, the Jomon Era, and Skiing.” Other exhibits include specially produced Appi lacquerware, everyday goods from the past, and items connected with Kojun, the 15th great high priest of Kan’eiji Temple Gokoku-in.

Located about 30 minutes towards Ninohe on National Route 4 from the Tohoku Expressway’s Takizawa Interchange, it opened as the first outdoor sculpture museum in Iwate Prefecture, and is next to Roadside Station Ishigaminooka. You can enjoy outdoor exhibitions where you can see nature throughout the four seasons and sculptures, and special exhibitions centered on artists related to Iwate. There is a lavender garden in the outdoor exhibition hall, and about 20,000 plants are in full bloom from late June to early July, when lavender fair is also held. It also holds various workshops including one for dried flowers. In addition, it is certified as a “Koibito no Seichi” (Lover’s Sanctuary). (The outdoor exhibition hall will be closed until early summer of 2020 due to renovation work)

Iwate Areas

around-area-map

A northern Tohoku prefecture promising peace and quiet, Iwate is sparsely populated, replacing people with snow-capped mountains, history-rich sites, and fields of crops that are to thank for the region’s delicious local cuisine. Meander along the three-city Golden Route, where you’ll visit the grand Buddhist temples of Hiraizumi and the Tono folk villages before tasting the three famed noodle dishes of Morioka.
